Northland School Division is accepting applications for the position of 0.5 FTE with potential to increase to 1.0 FTE/ full time Cree Language Coordinator. The Cree Language Coordinator champions Indigenous language revitalization across the division. The primary focus is developing Plains Cree (Y-Dialect) syllabic curricula for Grades 4, 5, and 6. This hybrid role bridges the gap between classrooms, government bodies, post-secondary institutions, and the public. The Coordinator ensures all resources are culturally vetted, and works closely with Elders and Knowledge Keepers.

Major responsibilities include:

Curriculum Development & Cultural Vetting

- Provide recommendations to support the development of Plains Cree (Y-Dialect) syllabic curricula for Grades 4, 5, and 6 in the Y-dialect.
- Consult Elders and Knowledge Keepers to ensure authentic cultural integration.
- Review all learning resources rigorously and make recommendations with respect to linguistic precision and protocol.
- Recommend assessment frameworks to measure student language proficiency.

Instructional Support & Mentorship

- Provide guidance to support the use of Y-dialect syllabics in language instruction.
- Lead career development sessions for school staff in line with this area of expertise.
- Distribute approved materials that support diverse learning needs.

Community Advocacy & Partnerships

- Promote language acquisition to school communities and the public.




- Liaise with government agencies to align with educational standards.
- Partner with universities to bridge the gap in post-secondary language programs.
- Foster trusted relationships with local Indigenous community leadership.

Qualifications and Requirements: Education & Experience

- A university degree with preference for, Indigenous Studies, Linguistics, or related fields.
- High fluency in Plains Cree (Y-Dialect), both spoken and written syllabics.
- Experience working with Elders and following community cultural protocols.
- Familiarity with current Alberta programs of study is preferred.

Skills & Competencies

- Deep cultural grounding in Cree traditions, histories, and laws.
- Strong relationship builder capable of navigating academic and community spaces.
- Excellent communication skills for public, government, and academic presentations.
- Independent worker thriving in a flexible, hybrid workplace environment.
