Database Administrator (MSSQL / Azure) – 6-Month Contract – Toronto (Hybrid)

I'm hiring a senior MSSQL DBA for my client, one of Canada's Big 5 banks, supporting database operations across capital markets and retail banking lines of business.

You'll join a 20-person DBA team handling database builds, cloud migrations, performance tuning, and complex incident resolution. This is an independent, ownership-heavy role — you'll lead technical resolutions for production incidents, run root cause analysis, and work directly with solution design, engineering, and security teams. The team has solid leadership, a real mentorship culture, and a track record of converting contractors to permanent roles.

What you'll be doing

- Installing, configuring, and maintaining SQL Server environments in Azure, plus PostgreSQL support
- Leading performance tuning — indexing, query optimization, resource management
- Driving cloud migration work
- Managing backup, restore, and recovery, plus HA/DR activities
- Owning production incidents end to end, including post-mortems and RCAs
- Participating in a rotating weekly on-call schedule





What you'll need:
- 5+ years of database administration experience with strong, recent Azure SQL depth (Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance, or SQL on Azure VMs)
- 2+ years hands-on with PostgreSQL
- Proven cloud migration experience
- Deep tuning, query optimization, and troubleshooting skills
- Solid backup/restore and recovery knowledge
- Experience implementing database security — TDE, Always Encrypted, access control, auditing

Nice to have: ServiceNow, SolarWinds, Azure certifications, financial services background.

Details

- 6-month contract, strong potential for extension or conversion to full-time
- Hybrid: 1 day/week onsite in downtown Toronto
- Monday–Friday, 37.5 hrs/week, with a rotating on-call/standby week (including weekend coverage during your rotation)
- Pay: $55–$60/hr T4 or up to $70/hr incorporated, depending on experience
- Fast process: up to 2 interviews, offer decision within one business day of final round
