1. Summary
Harbour Landing Village Childcare Centre is a licensed daycare providing care for infants to preschool-aged children, with additional Before & Aftercare for school-age children. Regulated by the Ministry of Education, the centre maintains high standards in staffing, safety, and programming, offering a play-based, inclusive environment where children are encouraged to explore, create, and develop independence.
The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) is responsible for delivering nurturing care and education, building trusting relationships with children and families, and supporting each child’s social, emotional, and developmental growth. Working closely with a collaborative team, the ECE helps create a safe, engaging, and supportive environment that reflects the centre’s philosophy of fostering capable and confident learners.
2. Responsibilities
- Child Supervision & Safety: Provide constant supervision and ensure the safety, health, and overall well-being of all children in care at all times.
- Program Development & Implementation:
- Design and deliver age-appropriate, play-based programs that promote children’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development.
- Lead activities such as storytelling, music, dramatic play, art, sensory activities, outdoor exploration, and physical play.
- Foster a culturally sensitive, inclusive environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and decision-making.
- Environment Management: Plan and maintain safe, organized, and stimulating learning environments that meet regulatory and licensing standards.
- Observation & Assessment:
- Observe children to assess abilities, developmental milestones, and areas of need.
- Document observations and share progress, concerns, or recommendations with parents, guardians, and team members.
- Behaviour Guidance & Support: Respond to individual needs using developmentally appropriate teaching methods, positive reinforcement, and conflict resolution strategies.
- Daily Living Skills Support:
Assist children in developing independence and life skills, including healthy eating, dressing, toileting, and hygiene habits.
- Family & Community Relationships:
- Build positive relationships with families, providing regular communication and updates about their child’s progress and experiences.
- Collaborate with community service providers to support children’s development.
- Classroom Maintenance & Safety:
- Maintain program equipment, toys, and materials in good repair; ensure all items are safe, clean, and organized.
- Follow and model proper health, safety, and infection prevention practices.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues and team leads to plan seasonal programming, evaluate program effectiveness, and support a high-quality childcare environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
3. Skills, Qualification, & Requirements
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience working in a licensed childcare centre or early learning environment.
- Early Childhood Education (ECE) Certification or actively working toward certification as required by the Ministry of Education.
- Play and Exploration Certificate (Level 1 and/or 2) preferred.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
- Completion of WHMIS training.
- Recent Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (dated within the past 3 months).
- Robust communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Caring, empathetic, and patient personality with a genuine passion for working with children.
- Robust organizational skills with an ability to establish and maintain routines.
- Understanding of early childhood development and family dynamics.
- Flexible and adaptable, with a willingness to learn and support a dynamic childcare environment.
- Positive, team-oriented attitude with strong collaboration skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends if required.
