ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURING SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT (SMT)
Location: Belleville, Ontario
Department: Engineering / Manufacturing
Compensation: $100,000 to $130,000 annually

ABOUT THE PROSPECT
Top Tier Talent Group is recruiting an experienced Electronics Manufacturing Subject Matter Expert for an established automotive manufacturer in Belleville, Ontario that is expanding its electronics manufacturing capabilities. This role will lead the implementation and operation of Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly.
This is a rare build-and-run role. You will define the process and equipment requirements, lead the sourcing and selection of SMT equipment, support installation and commissioning, launch the line into production, and then take on operational leadership of the SMT manufacturing function once it is established.
You will work closely with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Program Management, Supply Chain, Maintenance, equipment suppliers and external technology partners to build reliable, repeatable and scalable electronics manufacturing processes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
SMT Implementation and Capital Equipment
- Lead the development and implementation of SMT manufacturing capability
- Define process and equipment requirements and develop technical specifications for new equipment
- Evaluate SMT equipment, suppliers and system integrators; review quotations and technical proposals
- Support capital budgeting, cost justification, supplier selection and project timing
- Coordinate equipment build schedules, installation, commissioning and production readiness
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
- Establish manufacturing parameters, process controls and production standards
- Ensure equipment meets capacity, cycle time, quality and reliability targets
- Resolve equipment, process and supplier issues during ramp-up and launch
Electronics Manufacturing Process Support
- Provide technical expertise across PCB and PCBA manufacturing, including solder paste printing and inspection, pick-and-place, reflow soldering, Automated Optical Inspection (AOI),
electrical and functional testing, electronic subassemblies, LED assembly, and component handling and traceability
- Identify opportunities to improve yield, throughput, quality and equipment performance
- Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of manufacturing defects and process failures
- Develop standardized work, process documentation and operating procedures
Product Industrialization and Launch
- Partner with Product Engineering and Program Management to transition new electronic products from design into production
- Participate in DFM/DFA reviews and assess designs for manufacturing feasibility
- Support prototype and pre-production builds, design freeze, equipment kickoff and production-readiness activities
- Identify process, equipment and manufacturing risks during product development
- Ensure processes can support program timing, validation and launch requirements
- Support engineering changes and product modifications after launch
Automotive Quality Systems
- Support processes in line with IATF 16949 and applicable Customer Specific Requirements
- Participate in APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, Control Plans, Process Flow Diagrams, MSA, SPC, process capability studies and run-at-rate activities
- Lead root cause analysis and 8D problem solving, and support corrective actions related to electronics manufacturing quality
Operational Leadership Following successful implementation of the SMT line, this role will take on broader operational responsibility for the electronics manufacturing area, which may include:
- Overseeing day-to-day SMT production performance across safety, quality, delivery, cost and productivity
- Managing throughput, yield, downtime and overall equipment effectiveness
- Supporting staffing, training and resource planning, and developing operators and technicians
- Coordinating Maintenance, Engineering and Quality support
- Developing preventative maintenance and spare-parts strategies
- Driving continuous improvement across the electronics manufacturing operation
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Electrical, Electronics, Manufacturing or Mechatronics Engineering, Engineering Technology or a related discipline
- 7 to 10+ years of progressive experience in electronics manufacturing, SMT manufacturing, manufacturing engineering or electronics operations
- Strong hands-on experience with SMT processes and equipment
- Demonstrated experience implementing, commissioning or launching SMT equipment or production lines
- Strong understanding of PCB and PCBA manufacturing in a high-volume environment
- Automotive or Tier 1 manufacturing experience strongly preferred; IATF 16949 experience preferred
- Working knowledge of APQP, PPAP, PFMEA and related automotive launch and quality requirements
- Experience with capital-equipment projects, equipment suppliers, integrators and technology partners
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical and root-cause problem-solving skills
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Maintenance and Supply Chain
Additional knowledge considered an asset: manufacturing automation, equipment validation and commissioning, traceability systems, LED technologies, and electronics manufacturing quality controls.
