Purpose of the Position

Wesley United Church is a vibrant church community housed in a historical building dating back to 1879. Our premises include the church sanctuary, meeting spaces with kitchens, classrooms, offices, and rental spaces (including Wesley House).

The Facilities Caretaker plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of our property. Working primarily independently during morning hours, the Caretaker ensures that facilities are welcoming, secure, well-maintained, and ready for worship, programming, and community use.

This role is approximately 80% hands-on custodial work and 20% property oversight and minor maintenance.

Working Relationships The Caretaker reports directly to the Operations Manager and works cooperatively and independently with all staff, volunteers, renters, and community partners of Wesley United Church.

What We Offer

- Stability: Predictable morning hours (Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM).
- Financial Security: Employer-supported pension plan.
- Health & Wellness: Comprehensive benefits package.
- Growth: Extra earning potential through flexible, premium-paid occasional event coverage.

Duties

1. General Cleaning (80% of Role)

- Daily Care: Clean, sanitize, and replenish supplies in all washrooms daily. Empty indoor garbage containers daily.

- Waste Management: Place recycling and green bins out weekly. Place garbage for collection every other week. Sort recycling as required. [1]
- Periodic Tasks: Clean interior and exterior windows at least twice per year. Clean window blinds at least seasonally. Strip and wax tile floors in Ballantyne Hall annually (frequency to be confirmed).

1. Security & Building Systems (20% of Role)

- Morning Opening: Perform morning opening procedures at 7:00 AM, unlocking necessary doors and monitoring the property for safety.
- Lock-Up: Check all fire doors, windows,

and exterior doors, securing them completely before leaving at 12:00 PM. Ensure interior doors are closed daily for fire safety and heating efficiency.
- Boiler / Heating: Monitor and adjust heating in all areas daily during the heating season. Ensure heat is on for scheduled activities (e.g., Sunday services, AA meetings). Inspect the boiler and piping at least weekly, turning the system on/off seasonally.
- Safety Checks: Check and sign off on fire extinguisher tags monthly. Act as the primary contact on the call list for off-hours security/alarm issues.

1. Exterior & Seasonal Maintenance

- Warm Weather: Cut lawns and maintain lawn equipment during the growing season (at least weekly). Trim bushes and shrubs at least once per season.
- Winter Weather: Clear snow from entrances, sidewalks, and the Wesley House porch/stairs; apply salt as needed to ensure safety and accessibility. (Note: City clears perimeter sidewalks; an outside contractor clears the parking lot). Maintain adequate salt, buckets, and shovels at each entrance.
- Plumbing Care: Shut off or open exterior water taps seasonally. Pour drain cleaner into the sewer line (water heater room) at least annually.

1. Minor Repairs & Inventory

- Maintenance Logs: Maintain a running list of minor repairs and complete them weekly. Maintain a list of major repairs and submit it to the Operations Manager monthly.
