The Childcare Cook is responsible for the planning, purchasing, preparation, and serving of nutritious snacks and meals for children in our childcare programs. This role also supports the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and childcare setting.
This is a float position that provides cooking coverage across YMCA childcare locations based on operational needs. The successful candidate will not be assigned to one permanent site and must have reliable transportation to travel between locations.
This is an initial 3-month term position, with the possibility of extension based on operational needs.
Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and serve wholesome and nutritious meals and snacks in accordance with applicable health regulations and Canada’s Food Guide.
- Follow the established four-week menu rotation while ensuring variety and accommodating children’s allergies, dietary restrictions, and individual needs.
- Ensure all food preparation follows YMCA allergy-awareness requirements, including maintaining a peanut-free environment.
- Purchase food and kitchen supplies required for meal preparation and service while working within established budgets.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen and food preparation area.
- Follow proper food handling, sanitation, storage, and cleaning procedures.
- Support general cleaning and housekeeping duties within the childcare centre as required.
- Work collaboratively as part of the childcare team to support the social, emotional, and physical well-being of children in the program.
- Model positive behaviour and demonstrate the YMCA core values of Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Caring.
- Maintain positive and professional relationships with children, families, volunteers, students, and fellow staff members.
- Participate in required YMCA training, workshops, staff meetings, and childcare events.
- Assist with other duties as assigned by the Childcare Supervisor or designate.
Education, Experience & Qualifications
- Food Safe Certification is required.
- Previous experience in food preparation, cooking, or food service is required.
- Experience preparing food in a childcare, school, or similar group setting is considered an asset.
- Previous experience working with children is considered an asset.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation.
- Ability and willingness to travel between YMCA childcare locations as required.
- Strong organization and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a team environment.
- Knowledge of food allergies, dietary restrictions, and safe food-handling practices is an asset.
