Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Food Services Assistant Manager to lead our culinary and food service operations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in food preparation, restaurant management, and team supervision. This role offers an exciting opportunity to oversee daily food service activities, ensure exceptional customer experiences, and uphold the highest standards of food safety and quality within a supportive senior living environment.
Responsibilities
- Provides leadership and support to the Food Services Manager in effective operations of the Food Services Department within a unionized environment.
- Assumes responsibility for Food Services operations in the absence of the Food Services Manager.
- Ensures high-quality, nutritious meals are provided to clients in accordance with individuals dietary needs.
- Promotes an inclusive and supportive work environment that reflects the philosophy and objectives of the Food Services Department and the Mission, Vision, and Values of OSCR, while encouraging respectful and collaborative labour-management relations.
- Purchases and receives food products necessary to implement the planned menu, ensuring appropriate quantity, quality, and availability. Supports the Food Services Manager with ordering food and supplies in alignment with menu requirements, nutrition standards, and cost controls.
- Ensures high-quality meals and adequate supply of food products are available for OSCaR’s Place.
- Manages inventory,
ensuring appropriate stock rotation and protected food storage practices that comply with all applicable regulations and standards.
- Ensures food preparation follows the planned menu and standardized recipes, that safe food-handling practices are applied, and that equipment is used appropriately and safely. Ensures daily refrigerator and freezer temperature checks are completed, initiates appropriate action when equipment is not functioning properly, and ensures food production areas are properly cleaned and maintained.
- Assists in the planning, preparation, and service of meals that meet residents’ nutritional, cultural, religious, and therapeutic dietary needs.
- Monitors food quality, portion control, presentation, and service standards.
- Identifies and reports food that does not meet established quality standards; supports client satisfaction
- Provides day-to-day operational guidance to unionized food service staff in accordance with the collective agreement.
- Assists with staff scheduling, shift coverage, and workload distribution within established staffing guidelines.
- Participates in employee interviews as required; assists with the orientation of new employees; monitors on-the-job training and communicates staff progress to the Food Services Manager.
- Identifies and refers performance, attendance, or conduct concerns to the Food Services Manager in accordance with labour relations processes.
- Provides day-to-day work direction to production staff (cooks, kitchen help, and porters) in support of scheduling,
training, and performance processes.
- Listens to and addresses employee concerns respectfully, documents observations related to performance or conduct, and brings them forward to the Food Services Manager
- Oversees cashiering activities, including the collection of monies, recording of daily totals, preparation of routine reports, and entry of items into the computer system.
- Assists with ordering food and supplies in accordance with budgetary guidelines and approved suppliers. Monitors inventory levels, storage practices, and food waste, supporting cost-effective operations while maintaining food quality and client satisfaction.
Note: Due to the evolving nature of the work and departmental needs, other responsibilities and duties may be added, modified, or removed as required.
Education/ Knowledge / Qualifications
- Diploma or certificate in Food Service Management, Nutrition, Culinary Arts, or a related field.
- Food Handler Certification (required).
- Certified Dietary Manager or equivalent (preferred).
- Two-year Community College Diploma in food service supervision and nutrition management or diploma in culinary management preferred.
Experience
- One to three years of experience in an institutional kitchen setting.
- One year of on-the-job training.
Pay: $30.80-$35.65 per hour
Ability to commute/relocate
- Oakville, ON L6L 5G5: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
