Job Summary
The Health Records Technician codes, abstracts, and submits DAD and NACRS data following CIHI standards and provincial and organizational guidelines. The Health Records Technician is responsible for data quality and analysis, transcription, release of information, record retention, and other department activities, as assigned. All responsibilities are carried out in accordance with applicable legislation such as the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA). The Health Records Technician plays a vital role in supporting patient safety, effective health service delivery,
and compliance with legal and accreditation standards across Ontario’s healthcare system.
Requirements
- Diploma in Health Information Management (HIM) from a CHIMA accredited program.
- Consideration may be given to those enrolled in a CHIMA recognized health information management program with a student or associate CHIMA membership
- Canadian College of Health Information Management Certification.
- Active member of the Canadian Health Information Management Association.
- Minimum two (2) years of health information management experience.
- Sensitivity to privacy and confidentiality.
- Clerical skills including exceptional typing, filing, organization, and interpersonal skills.
- Prior transcription experience preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of ICD-10-CA & CCI coding conventions, medical terminology and disease nomenclature, and statistical interpretation and presentation.
- Background in electronic applications including word processing and spreadsheets.
