Company Description
IJW is an boutique independent investment bank founded in 2004, providing M&A; and strategic advisory services to mid-market companies globally, with a focus on the technology and consumer sectors. The firm has professionals located across Montreal, Toronto, and the U.S.
IJW operates with lean deal teams and an entrepreneurial culture. Our Analysts work directly with senior bankers and clients and are given meaningful responsibility early in their careers. We place significant emphasis on professional development, continuous learning and progressively increasing responsibility as our junior bankers develop.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an Analyst to join our M&A; team.
Analysts at IJW are involved throughout the transaction lifecycle - from initial company and industry analysis through marketing materials, buyer outreach, due diligence, valuation, negotiation and closing. Given our lean team structure, the successful candidate will have exposure to senior bankers, management teams, business owners, private equity investors and strategic acquirers significantly earlier than at many larger institutions.
We are looking for someone who combines strong analytical capabilities with curiosity, sound judgment, attention to detail and a high degree of ownership. Technical skills are important, but so is the ability to communicate effectively, manage competing priorities and understand the broader strategic objective behind the work.
As an Analyst, you will be expected to provide a broad range of analytical, research and presentation preparation support to all the professionals within the group. As part of the M&A; group, you will gain exposure to working with individuals from various groups across the firm. A team approach to executing coverage and financing assignments is designed to provide progressive, on-the-job training.
Responsibilities:
Transaction Execution
- Support the execution of sell-side, buy-side and other strategic advisory mandates throughout the transaction lifecycle.
- Prepare transaction materials including confidential information memoranda, management presentations, teasers,
process letters, buyer updates and other client materials.
- Coordinate buyer and investor outreach, including maintaining target lists, tracking correspondence, managing follow-ups and supporting interactions with counterparties.
- Support and increasingly take ownership of due diligence processes, including virtual data rooms, diligence trackers, information requests and coordination among clients and advisors.
- Manage timelines, open items and deliverables across multiple concurrent mandates, proactively identifying bottlenecks and next steps
Financial Analysis and Modeling
- Build and maintain financial models and analyses supporting M&A; transactions and strategic assignments.
- Perform comparable company, precedent transaction, DCF and other valuation analyses.
- Analyze historical and forecast financial performance, operating KPIs and business drivers.
Team Collaboration and Support
- Work closely with Analysts, Associates and senior bankers in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Seek and incorporate feedback and take ownership of continued professional development.
- Contribute positively to IJW's culture and support other team members when required.
- Participate in internal training, knowledge sharing and firm-building initiatives.
Client Engagement & Counterparty Communication
- Participate in client working sessions, management meetings, buyer calls and business development discussions.
- Prepare agendas, discussion materials and follow-up items and help proactively move workstreams forward.
- Develop the ability to communicate confidently and professionally with management teams, investors and other transaction participants.
- Work closely with senior bankers and progressively assume greater client-facing responsibility as capabilities develop.
What We're Looking For: We place significant weight on attitude, judgment, curiosity and potential, in addition to technical capabilities.
Successful candidates will generally demonstrate:
- Strong analytical and quantitative capabilities.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
- High degree of ownership, initiative and personal accountability.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively under tight deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Intellectual curiosity and an interest in understanding businesses, industries and transaction dynamics.
- Ability to receive and implement feedback quickly.
- Positive, team-oriented attitude and willingness to contribute beyond assigned responsibilities.
- Strong working knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint.
Qualifications We're Seeking:
- Undergraduate degree in business, finance, accounting, economics or another relevant discipline.
- 0–3 years of relevant professional experience; prior investment banking, private equity, transaction advisory, corporate finance, consulting or related experience is an asset.
- Prior M&A; or finance internship experience is considered an asset for candidates entering directly from undergraduate studies.
- Progress toward a CFA, CPA or CBV designation is considered an asset but is not required.
- Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset.
What You Can Expect at IJW IJW is a demanding but highly developmental setting. Analysts are expected to work hard, take ownership of their responsibilities and continuously raise the quality of their work. In return, we aim to provide junior bankers with unusually early exposure to live transactions, clients and senior decision-makers.
Development at IJW is intended to be progressive: as an Analyst demonstrates technical capability, reliability, judgment and ownership, they are given increasing responsibility across deal execution, client interaction and leadership.
