Description The Laser Cutting Machine Set-Up Operator / Programmer is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating our JQ Laser (1530-AP) Cutting System to produce precision-cut 2-D components in accordance with engineering drawings, work orders, quality specifications, and production requirements.

This position requires a combination of CAD/CAM programming, machine setup, and hands-on laser cutting machine operation. The Set-Up Operator / Programmer will prepare and select cutting programs, optimize machine parameters, perform machine setups and adjustments, load and process materials, inspect completed parts, and troubleshoot cutting or machine-related issues.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of laser cutting processes, blueprint reading, material types and thicknesses, dimensional inspection, and safe machine operation. The role also requires the use of hand and power tools, including grinders, for part finishing and general fabrication activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Program, set up, and operate the JQ Laser (1530-AP) Cutting System.
- Modify and optimize cutting programs based on engineering drawings, part specifications, and production requirements.
- Prepare machine programs and cutting layouts/nests to support efficient material utilization and production.
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, dimensions, tolerances, and work-order requirements.
- Perform complete machine setups and changeovers for various materials, thicknesses, and part configurations.
- Select and adjust appropriate cutting parameters based on material type, thickness, part geometry, and quality requirements.
- Load the correct programs and verify machine settings prior to production.
- Perform first-off inspections and verify parts meet dimensional and quality specifications before continuing production.
- Monitor machine operation and cutting quality throughout the production run.
- Make necessary program, setup, or parameter adjustments to maintain part quality and production efficiency.
- Identify and troubleshoot cutting issues, machine alarms, program errors, and quality concerns.
- Load and unload raw materials and finished components as required.
- Accurately measure completed parts using measuring tapes,



vernier calipers, micrometers, and other inspection equipment as required.
- Use hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools, including grinders and power files, to remove burrs, clean edges, and finish components as required.
- Perform routine machine inspections, cleaning, and basic preventive maintenance.
- Report machine faults, material deficiencies, quality concerns, and equipment issues to the appropriate supervisor.
- Complete required production, material-tracking, and quality documentation accurately.
- Ensure WIP and completed material is properly identified and transferred to the appropriate work centre or next stage of production.
- Follow all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions (WIs), quality standards, and production procedures.
- Follow all company Health & Safety policies, Laser Safety Procedures, and safe work practices, including the proper use of PPE.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, and Skill Requirements

- 1–3 years of experience operating and/or setting up CNC laser cutting equipment preferred.
- Previous experience with laser cutting machine setup and operation is required.
- Experience creating or modifying CAD/CAM cutting programs is strongly preferred.
- Ability to independently perform machine setups, changeovers, and cutting parameter adjustments.
- Working knowledge of CNC/laser cutting principles, including material types, thicknesses, cutting speeds, and machine parameters.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T.;
- Ability to use precision measuring equipment, including vernier calipers and micrometers.
- Experience using grinders and other hand, pneumatic, or electrical fabrication tools.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.




- Strong attention to detail with a focus on dimensional accuracy and part quality.
- Ability to identify cutting-quality issues and make appropriate machine or program adjustments.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
- Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple production priorities.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of manufacturing health and safety requirements and safe laser operation practices.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

- Work is performed in a fast-paced manufacturing workplace.
- Frequent standing, walking, reaching, bending, crouching, and other physical movements associated with machine operation.
- Regular handling of raw materials, finished components, tools, and equipment.
- Ability to lift, carry, or maneuver materials and components weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent use of hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity when operating machinery, measuring parts, and using hand tools.
- Required to wear appropriate PPE and comply with all company safety procedures.
