The Salvation

Reporting to the Executive Director, as a member of the Executive Team, the Nursing Manager is responsible for organization, development, and management of the nursing department, including cost management, personnel, materials, productivity, and quality of work; works closely with the Clinical Nurse Leader in planning for resident care within the organization according to strategic objectives and priorities; accountable for nursing related discipline/grievances, in collaboration with Employee Relations.
The Nursing
Manager promotes the philosophy, mission, objectives, and policies of The Salvation Army Agape Hospice hires, orientates, and supervises/coaches direct reports; prepares and delivers nursing team performance reviews. Investigates complaints; receives and makes recommendations on all incidents, errors, and near misses for learning opportunities pertaining to the nursing section; ensures standard operating procedures for nursing are communicated frequently and met; reviews the nursing budget and alerts the Executive Director of any unusual variances; maintains medical supplies and equipment; maintains weekly nursing section communication processes of the whiteboard; ensures Infection Prevention and Control protocols are consistently undertaken by all individuals entering resident rooms. As identified in the AHS Service Provider’s Contract Staffing Obligations #10.01 (b) (v) The Nursing Lead is responsible for, but not limited to, the following: The direction of nursing services
- Supervising Personnel Conducting and/or ensuring that formal interviews, tours, and meetings with potential Residential Hospice Clients occur prior to placement when needed Collaborating ensuring communication with the Manager of Hospice Operations/Hospice Access regarding; (a)
Admissions that may require special considerations (b)Transfers of Residential Hospice Clients to the emergency department of admissions to acute care (c) Residential Hospice Client requests to move out of the facility (d) Use of emergency medical services (911) Leadership Works collaboratively with the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL)to provide leadership and management of the provision of care for the residents/families. In the absence of the CNL, Schedules, assigns workloads, and overall management of Charge Nurses, Registered Nurses, Graduate Nurses, Resident Attendants, Unit Clerks, Volunteers, practicum students and other related nursing section positions. Assesses nursing requirements to ensure that care needs are met. Problem solves with the Unit Clerk to ensure that scheduling needs are met (In the absence of the CNL). Collaborates with the CNL to ensure that nursing assignments are completed for all shifts; works to resolve any immediate differences that occur. Ensures communication (verbal and/or written) is provided to all members of the nursing section in a timely basis, so that direct reports successfully complete their tasks. Assesses nursing practices and techniques and recommends changes, development and/or education needs.
Clinical Care
Establishes and maintains standards of care, adherence to policies and procedures to promote consistency and high-quality care
- Ensures that nursing audits and accreditation requirements are completed within established timelines. Provides leadership with complex or demanding resident and family situations. Ensures weekend and holiday pharmacy requests are sufficient. Ensures division of tasks for nursing section is balanced - fulfilling the special requests from the residents.
Administrative
Prepares annual budgets, planning for all nursing section manpower needs, including recruitment/retention and scheduling strategies. Monitors section performance against goals to ensure that progress is being made and that corrective action is taken in accordance with the collective agreement and related legislation. Prepares and provides performance appraisals identifying employee strengths and limitations; provides guidance and suggestions to improve performance by encouraging career development and further education.
Ensures that statistics (i.e. bed count, bed occupancy, PPS, POS information is completed and submitted in accordance with The Salvation Army and Alberta Health Services requirements. Acts as the lead for nursing department (employee & client) complaints and investigations. Conducts investigations and provides recommendations, except where named in the complaint.
Ensures that appropriate documentation is completed and approved for employees relating to WCB/Disability claims, Incident Reports, paid and unpaid leaves, and overtime requests. Monitors costs and approved budget for direct nursing, supplies, and day-today expenditures
- Works collaboratively with the CNL to endure medical supply orders are appropriate, stocking and organization of medical and pandemic supplies within budgetary requirements. Immediately responds to any safety concerns that arise. Notifies the Executive Director or designate immediately if a critical incident occurs. Ensures that Incident Reports and WCB forms are given to employees when occupational health and safety incidents occur, Ensures that Incident Reports are initiated for any resident related incidents, In collaboration with the CNL and Unit Clerk, ensures that non-urgent facility needs are communicated to Maintenance at the beginning of the shift (i.e. elevator not working). Plans and leads nursing section meetings. Promotes the professional reputation of Agape Hospice by presenting at palliative/hospice conference wherever possible. Current active registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or Professional Association relating to degree. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing program; baccalaureate degree in nursing with an emphasis in palliative care an asset
- CHPCN Certification required or currently in the CHPCN Certificate program with graduation within two years, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: Previous experience in a hospice/palliative care setting essential; 2-3 years’ experience in a supervisory position within a health care setting, preferably hospice/palliative care.
Personal: ability to work well as a team leader and a member of the nursing section; excellent teamwork and team building skills
- Intermittent exposure to health hazards in treating residents; position requires lifting, transferring, carrying, and bending to move residents
- This is a full-time position.
Weekly scheduled hours: 40 This is an onsite role with the work location as Agape Hospice, Calgary. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
