About MedTach
MedTach is a growing Canadian medical technology company representing specialized physiological monitoring and diagnostic technologies used by hospitals, universities, researchers and healthcare professionals across Canada.
As the company grows, we are building the internal team, systems and financial discipline needed to support that growth responsibly.
We currently work with an external bookkeeping service that maintains our books and monthly accounting records. We are looking for a part-time Financial Controller / Analyst to take ownership of our internal finance function and ensure management has reliable financial information for decision-making.
This is not primarily a bookkeeping position.
Initially, the priority is straightforward: make our financial processes reliable, improve visibility into cash flow and profitability, and give management a clear understanding of the company's financial position.
Over time, we would like this person to become a trusted internal finance partner who helps management make better decisions around pricing, hiring, investment, financing and growth.
The Role
You will work directly with MedTach management and coordinate with our external bookkeeping service.
Your initial responsibility will be to make sure our monthly financial process runs reliably and that management receives accurate, timely and useful financial information.
Once those fundamentals are established, the role can increasingly support forecasting, pricing, budgeting, investment decisions and growth planning.
We are particularly interested in someone who can look at the numbers and tell us what management should know, rather than simply producing reports.
What You'll Own Initially
Responsibilities will include
- Coordinate the monthly financial close with our external bookkeeping service
- Ensure required financial documents and information are provided accurately and on schedule
- Review monthly financial statements for accuracy and investigate discrepancies
- Review the existing chart of accounts, transaction coding and financial reporting structure, and recommend improvements where needed
- Develop and maintain a concise monthly management reporting package
- Monitor cash position and short-term cash flow
- Review accounts receivable and accounts payable and flag issues requiring attention
- Develop reliable gross-margin reporting by product, manufacturer and/or sale
- Help establish and maintain accurate COGS and landed-cost information
- Monitor operating expenses and identify unusual trends or opportunities
- Improve financial processes, controls and reporting
- Coordinate with management,
bookkeeping, accounting and operations as required
How the Role Can Grow As the core finance function becomes established and MedTach grows, responsibilities may expand to include:
- Cash-flow forecasting
- Budgeting and financial planning
- Pricing and margin analysis
- Maintaining internal pricing models and price lists
- Evaluating the financial impact of hiring and investment decisions
- Helping management determine when and where the company can responsibly reinvest in growth
- Supporting working-capital and financing decisions
- Developing financial KPIs and more advanced management reporting
- Maintaining forecasts and financial documentation to improve MedTach's readiness for financing, lending or funding opportunities
- Supporting management with financial analysis for strategic and growth decisions
The intention is not to build unnecessary financial complexity. We want a finance function appropriate for a growing company that provides reliable information, useful analysis and better decision-making.
What We're Looking For
You may be a strong fit if you have:
- Experience in controllership, financial analysis, management accounting or small-business finance
- Strong understanding of financial statements, cash flow, AR/AP and gross margins
- Experience working with external bookkeepers and accountants
- Experience with product-based, distribution, importing or multi-currency businesses
- An understanding of COGS, landed costs and product-level profitability
- Strong Excel or spreadsheet skills
- Experience with accounting software such as Xero, QuickBooks or similar platforms
- The ability to take incomplete or fragmented financial processes and make them systematic
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance managers
- Positive judgment, attention to detail and the ability to work independently
Experience with foreign-currency purchasing, FX, landed-cost calculations and gross-margin analysis would be particularly valuable. CPA designation, CPA candidacy or equivalent accounting experience is an asset, but practical ability and relevant experience are more important to us than credentials alone.
Experience with Xero, Dext, distribution,
importing or capital equipment sales would also be helpful, but medical-device experience is not required.
Who This Role Would Suit
This role may particularly suit someone who enjoys helping build and improve a business, wants meaningful responsibility within a smaller organization, and is looking for an ongoing part-time role that can grow in scope and hours over time.
You may currently work elsewhere or have other clients. Our goal is to find the right long-term person who becomes increasingly familiar with MedTach and can take greater ownership of the finance function as the company grows.
What Success Looks Like
Within the first few months, we would expect:
- A consistent and reliable monthly financial close process
- Financial statements available on a predictable schedule
- Clear visibility into cash, AR and AP
- Reliable product and manufacturer gross-margin information
- Better visibility into landed costs and the impact of foreign exchange
- A concise and useful monthly management report
- Management able to make pricing, hiring, investment and growth decisions with greater confidence
- Less management time spent chasing financial information
Compensation & Hours $35–$45/hour, depending on experience.
We expect the role to begin at approximately 20 hours per month. Hours do not need to be evenly distributed each week and may be concentrated around month-end, reporting deadlines and management needs. As long as we receive the information we need, we are highly flexible.
There may be additional hours during the initial onboarding and setup period as the successful candidate becomes familiar with the business, reviews our existing financial structure and establishes the initial reporting processes.
As MedTach grows and the finance function develops, there is meaningful opportunity for the role's hours, responsibilities and involvement in management decision-making to expand.
Our preference is to find the right long-term person and grow the position over time.
To Apply
Please submit your resume along with a short response to the following:
If you joined a small but growing company that already had an external bookkeeping service but limited internal financial reporting, what would you focus on during your first 60–90 days?
We are less interested in a formal cover letter than in understanding how you think, what you would prioritize and how you would approach building a reliable finance function.
