We are currently seeking a caring, skilled, and experienced individual to join our Student Services team as a Part-Time School Nurse. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing day-to-day nursing care and health support to students, including both local and international students, while contributing to a safe, healthy, and supportive school environment.
Located in southern Vancouver Island, our 29-acre boarding school campus is surrounded by fresh air and natural beauty. St. John’s Academy Shawnigan Lake, situated on a pristine location between the shores of Shawnigan Lake and the base of Mt. Baldy, provides an innovative approach to learning for both day and boarding students.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Title: Part-Time School Nurse
Reports to: Director of Student Life; Head of School, or their designate
Remuneration: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 annual salary for 20-25 hours per week (mornings) with on-call availability; meals provided when on shift; extended medical and dental package; optional RRSP contribution matching; optional on-campus housing.
Summary: The School Nurse is responsible for providing professional and compassionate health care to students throughout the school day. This includes assessing and responding to illness and injury, administering and monitoring medications, supporting students with ongoing health needs, maintaining confidential health records, and coordinating care with families and external health-care and insurance providers.
The successful candidate will work with students from diverse cultural and international backgrounds and should be comfortable supporting students who may be adjusting to a new school, community, or country. Strong clinical judgment, confidentiality, professionalism, and the ability to build positive relationships with students are essential.
Due to the nature of our boarding program, the School Nurse will also provide emergency on-call nursing support outside regular scheduled hours, as required,
including responding to urgent student health concerns and providing direction to boarding staff.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Health & Medication
- Provide professional nursing care and health support to students during regular school hours.
- Assess and respond to illnesses, injuries, and other health concerns.
- Support students with chronic health conditions, allergies, and ongoing medical needs.
- Safely receive, store, administer, and document prescription, non-prescription, and emergency medications.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student health and medication records.
- Communicate with parents/guardians, physicians, pharmacies, and other health-care and insurance providers as required.
Emergency & Boarding Support
- Provide emergency nursing support, including outside regular school hours as required.
- Respond to urgent health concerns involving boarding students and determine when further medical attention is required.
- Provide guidance to boarding staff regarding first aid, health concerns, and appropriate next steps.
- Assist international students in accessing local health-care services when required.
Communication, Safety & Wellness
- Work collaboratively with the school's student services team, administration, teachers, boarding staff, families, and external health-care providers.
- Support student MSP and insurance enrollment and follow-up communication
- Promote student wellness and healthy habits.
- Assist with communicable illness prevention, immunization scheduling, and response procedures.
- Participate as a member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of student health policies and emergency procedures.
EDUCATION,
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in good standing with the applicable British Columbia regulatory body.
- Current CPR/BLS and First Aid certification required.
- Previous experience working with children or adolescents strongly preferred.
- School nursing, pediatric, community health, emergency, or clinical nursing experience is an asset.
- Experience working with international students or in a multicultural environment is an asset.
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to remain calm and professional in emergency situations.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with adolescents and communicate sensitively and professionally.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a school team.
- Class 5 driver's license is an asset.
- Clean driver's abstract required if driving is part of the position.
- All new employees are required to complete a Criminal Record Review.
