Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on, analytical, and results-oriented Process Improvement Engineer/Specialist to support the optimization of plant operations, production processes, equipment, and workflow. This position is critical to improving productivity, efficiency, quality, safety, and consistency across the manufacturing operation.
The successful candidate will work closely with production, maintenance, quality, and leadership teams to identify opportunities for improvement, implement practical engineering solutions, and support the continued growth and operational excellence of the facility.
Key Responsibilities
Plant & Process Engineering
- Analyze production processes, workflows, and plant operations to identify opportunities to improve efficiency, throughput, yield, and cost.
- Develop, implement, and document process improvements and standard operating procedures.
- Evaluate production equipment, layouts, material flow, and operating methods and recommend improvements.
- Support the selection, installation, commissioning, and optimization of new equipment and production systems.
- Develop process specifications, equipment requirements, layouts, and technical documentation for capital and improvement projects.
- Use production data and performance metrics to identify root causes of operational issues and implement corrective actions.
- Lead or support continuous improvement initiatives using structured problem-solving and process-improvement methods.
- Work with production and maintenance teams to improve equipment reliability, uptime, changeover performance, and operating efficiency.
Production & Operational Support
- Provide day-to-day engineering support to production and operations teams.
- Troubleshoot process, equipment, and production issues and coordinate practical solutions with relevant teams.
- Support production planning and capacity analysis as required.
- Assist with line balancing, labour efficiency, production flow, and facility utilization initiatives.
- Monitor key operating metrics and provide recommendations to leadership based on data and observed performance.
- Support implementation of new products, processes, packaging formats, and production requirements.
Quality, Food Safety & Compliance
- Work closely with Quality Assurance and production teams to ensure process changes support food safety, quality, traceability, and regulatory requirements.
- Support HACCP and other food-safety initiatives where engineering or process controls are involved.
- Ensure engineering and process documentation is maintained accurately and supports applicable regulatory and company requirements.
- Support investigations of quality, production, or process deviations and implement sustainable corrective actions.
- Participate in audits, inspections, and continuous-improvement activities as required.
Projects & Continuous Improvement
- Identify and prioritize projects that improve safety, quality, capacity, productivity, and operating costs.
- Develop project scopes, timelines, budgets, and implementation plans in coordination with leadership and other departments.
- Coordinate with contractors, equipment suppliers, and service providers on engineering and plant projects.
- Track project progress and measure results against established objectives.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and practical problem solving throughout the plant.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary degree, diploma, skilled-trades certification, or other technical education in mechanical, chemical, industrial, manufacturing, or a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and significant relevant plant or manufacturing experience will be considered.
- 7+ years of engineering, process improvement, manufacturing, or plant operations experience; food processing experience is an asset.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, production equipment, plant layouts, and process optimization.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; experience with CAD, process mapping, or manufacturing software is an asset.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, project management,
and communication skills.
- High level of initiative, organization, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced production environment and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Skills
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence in Ontario, Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation, or another relevant technical designation is considered an asset but is not required.
- Experience in food processing or other regulated manufacturing environments.
- Familiarity with HACCP, SQF, CFIA, food safety, quality systems, and manufacturing compliance requirements.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, 5S, root-cause analysis, or other continuous-improvement methodologies.
- Experience with equipment installation, commissioning, automation, controls, or capital projects.
- Experience using production data and KPIs to drive operational improvements.
- Ability to translate engineering concepts into practical solutions for plant-floor teams.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary: $85,000 – $110,000 CAD annually, based on experience, qualifications, and professional designation
