Process Server – Independent Contractor

Document service, occupancy checks & address verification — multiple regions across Ontario

Job Type: Independent Contractor (contract, self-employed)

Schedule: Flexible – you set your own hours within required service windows

Pay: Paid per job. Rates are set per assignment based on document type, service area, and travel distance.

Locations: Ottawa, Pembroke,

About the Role A well-established legal support services provider is looking for reliable, detail-oriented independent contractors to handle field work across several regions of Ontario. This is more than document delivery — you will serve legal documents, confirm and verify occupancy at addresses, and verify address and asset information connected to active legal matters.

You will work independently in the field, following clear procedures and reporting what you observe accurately. If you enjoy problem-solving and being out on the road rather than behind a desk, this is a good fit. No prior experience is required — full training and a detailed field handbook are provided.

This is a document service and field verification role. It does not involve surveillance, undercover work, or private investigation, and no private investigator licence is required. All assignments are set out by our office and carried out according to our written procedures.

What You'll Do

● Serve legal documents — statements of claim, summonses, subpoenas, notices, and related court materials — on individuals and businesses in accordance with Ontario rules and required timelines

● Plan and carry out attempts at varied times, including mornings, evenings, and weekends, to maximize the chance of a successful serve

● Confirm recipient identity and, where documents are left with another party, confirm that person's identity and relationship to the recipient

● Complete occupancy checks — confirm whether a person still resides at or occupies an address, based on what you observe at the address and by speaking with neighbours,

building staff, or property contacts

● Complete address and asset verification assignments — for example, confirming a current address, whether a vehicle is at a property, or whether a business is operating at a listed location

● Use publicly available information — public records, directories, and online listings — to confirm addresses and plan the best time and place to attend

● Document your work thoroughly: field notes, photographs (building directories, vehicles, signage), timestamps, and detailed descriptions that will support an affidavit of service or a field verification report

● Report same-day updates to your assigned coordinator and keep the job-tracking platform current and accurate

● Prepare transparent, accurate affidavits, service reports, and field verification reports

● Handle sensitive or difficult situations — refusals, evasive recipients, vulnerable individuals — calmly and professionally

● Submit completed paperwork and invoices promptly once a job is finished

What We're Looking For

● Reliable transportation and a valid Ontario driver's licence

● A smartphone for GPS, photographs, and communication

● Strong attention to detail and clear written communication — your notes need to hold up in an affidavit and in court

● Resourcefulness and persistence — comfort confirming a correct address and working out the best time to attend

● Ability to work independently, manage your own schedule, and deal with the public professionally

● Discretion and sound judgment when handling confidential information

● Must be 18 years or older and able to pass a background check

● Prior process serving, security, courier, delivery, or customer service experience is an asset but not required — we provide full training

How You're Paid

This is a per-job contract role — there is no hourly wage, salary, or guaranteed minimum. You are paid a set fee for each assignment you accept and complete, with rates depending on the document type, the service area, and the travel involved. Occupancy checks and verification assignments are quoted separately from standard service jobs. Invoices are submitted after each completed job and paid on a regular cycle.

As an independent contractor, you are responsible for your own vehicle, equipment, expenses, taxes, and any applicable insurance or registration requirements.

What We Offer

● Steady, ongoing assignments based on your availability, coverage area, and performance

● Complete flexibility — accept the jobs that work for you and plan your own attempts within the required windows

● Full training and a detailed field handbook, plus a coordinator you can reach when a job gets complicated

● A mix of work — routine document service, occupancy checks, and address and asset verification assignments

● The chance to build real, transferable skills in an established, growing field of legal support work

How to Apply

Please submit your resume along with the regions or municipalities you are able to cover and your general availability. Applicants who are a fit will be contacted to discuss rates, onboarding, and next steps.

We thank all applicants for their interest; only those selected for further discussion will be contacted.

Pay: $40,000.00-$80,000.00 per year
