Come Learn Seafood With Us
Seven Seas Fish Market is looking for a friendly, dependable person to join our team at our Kitsilano seafood market.
You do not need seafood experience.
We can teach you about fish, shellfish, food safety, preparation and how a specialty food market operates. What we're looking for is harder to teach: someone who genuinely likes helping people, shows up when they say they will, listens to feedback and wants to get better at what they do.
This is a hands-on retail position. Some moments you'll be helping a customer figure out what fish to cook for dinner. Other moments you'll be packing an online order, restocking the seafood counter, helping a teammate or cleaning up after a busy rush.
If you enjoy working with people and like learning new things, this could be a great place to build your experience.
What You'll Be DoingHelping Customers A big part of this job is making customers feel welcome and helping them find what they need.
You'll
- Greet customers and offer friendly, helpful service
- Help customers choose seafood based on what they're making
- Answer questions about products, pricing and availability
- Learn basic cooking and preparation recommendations
- Recommend products when appropriate
- Take customer orders in person and over the phone
- Answer general questions and assist with special requests
- Operate our POS system and process purchases accurately
You won't be expected to know all the answers on day one. We'll teach you, and you'll always have experienced people around you to ask. Preparing & Fulfilling Orders
You'll also help make sure customers receive their orders accurately and on time.
This may include
- Weighing, packaging and labelling seafood
- Preparing customer pickup orders
- Fulfilling Toast online orders
- Preparing Uber Eats orders
- Taking and preparing phone orders
- Helping organize orders for pickup and delivery
- Double-checking products and quantities before orders leave the store
Keeping the Market Stocked A seafood market changes constantly throughout the day, so everyone helps keep things looking good and properly stocked.
You'll help with
- Restocking fresh fish and seafood displays
- Keeping fish properly displayed on ice
- Restocking prepared foods such as poke and other ready-to-eat items
- Restocking frozen and packaged products
- Receiving and putting away incoming shipments
- Organizing products in coolers and freezers
- Monitoring inventory and letting the team know when something is running low
Supporting the Seafood Team As you become more comfortable, we'll teach you additional skills and ways to help the team.
Depending on the day, this could include:
- Helping our fishmongers while they prepare whole fish
- Learning simple seafood preparation tasks such as pin-boning
- Packaging prepared seafood
- Helping team members preparing crab cakes, seafood dishes and other products
- Covering the counter while another team member completes production work
Nobody expects you to arrive knowing how to do these things. You'll learn them gradually. Cleaning & Food Safety
Working with food means cleanliness is part of everyone's job.
You'll help with
- Washing dishes and equipment
- Sanitizing counters and work areas
- Sweeping and mopping
- Taking out garbage
- Keeping displays, glass and customer areas clean
- Keeping products properly labelled and dated
- Monitoring cooler and freezer temperatures
- Helping ensure raw and prepared foods are stored correctly
- Following shellfish handling and traceability procedures
- Following our food-safety and sanitation procedures
This is a hands-on food environment, so you should be comfortable cleaning and working around fresh and raw seafood.
Who We're Looking For
You don't need an impressive resume.
We're much more interested in how you work and how you treat people.
You'll probably do well here if you are:
- Friendly and comfortable talking with customers
- Dependable and punctual
- Willing to ask questions when you don't know something
- Open to coaching and feedback
- Interested in learning and improving
- Able to admit when you've made a mistake and learn from it
- Someone who notices when something needs to be done
- Comfortable jumping between different tasks during a shift
- Patient and qualified with customers
- Helpful toward your teammates
- Organized and attentive to details
- Comfortable working in a busy workplace
- Comfortable standing for much of your shift
- Comfortable doing regular cleaning and stocking duties
Previous retail, grocery, restaurant, hospitality or customer-service experience is helpful, but it is not required.
Additional languages are an asset but are not required.
What You Can Learn Here
We believe this role can be much more than simply operating a cash register.
If you're interested and willing to learn, you'll have the chance to develop knowledge in:
- Fish and shellfish species
- Seafood quality and freshness
- Seafood handling and storage
- Food safety
- Basic seafood preparation
- Cooking methods
- Customer service
- Specialty food retail
- Merchandising
- Order fulfillment
- Inventory and store operations
Over time, strong team members can learn more products, take on more responsibility and become increasingly valuable members of the store.
What We Value
Customer service
We want customers to feel comfortable asking questions. Being welcoming and helpful matters more than already knowing everything about seafood.
Coachability
Nobody gets everything right immediately. We value people who listen, ask questions, accept feedback and apply what they've learned the next time.
Reliability A small retail team depends on each other. Showing up on time and doing what you said you would do matters.
Initiative
There is almost always something that can be cleaned, stocked, prepared or improved. We appreciate people who learn to recognize what needs attention.
Teamwork
Some days get busy. We help each other rather than worrying too much about whose job a particular task is.
