Competition Close Date: Thursday, August 27, 2026 at 11:59pm Salary: SA Grade I - $47.86 - $59.06/hour

FTE: 1.0 - 35 hours per week

This is a year-round position and is eligible to participate in the organization's Earned Days Off (EDO) program, providing additional scheduled time off from June to August in accordance with program guidelines

Position Description

Purpose The Senior Reporting & Strategic Writing Specialist works with senior leadership (including Directors and other senior system leaders) and partners across Service Units to develop high-quality, system-level reporting and written materials that support organizational accountability, transparency, and decision-making. This role translates complex data, analysis, policy, and operational information into clear, accurate, and accessible narratives for diverse audiences, including senior leadership, the Board of Trustees, Alberta Education and Childcare, and the public and plays a role in shaping how the organization communicates performance, progress, risks, and outcomes across service areas.

The Senior Reporting & Strategic Writing Specialist ensures all materials align with organizational priorities, legislative and provincial reporting requirements, and best practices in communication. The role requires a strategic thinker who can provide professional advice on messaging, structure, and clarity, contributing to public confidence while protecting the organization’s reputation.

Accountability

This job is accountable to:

- Work independently and collaboratively with senior leadership and internal clients across Service Units to plan, develop, and deliver complex system-level reports and written products aligned with organizational priorities and provincial requirements.
- Lead the development and coordination of major corporate and Board-facing reporting materials, inclusive of any reports required by Alberta Education and Childcare (ECC) or the Board, as well as any other legislated and public reports, along with associated summaries and supporting documentation.
- Collaborate with Communications and other partners to provide guidance on structure, clarity, tone, accessibility, and alignment of written materials.
- Synthesize complex data, technical information, policy content,



and input from multiple stakeholders into clear, concise, and meaningful narratives tailored to diverse audiences.
- Ensure all written products meet high standards of quality, accuracy, consistency, and alignment, recognizing their significance in public reporting and system accountability.
- Identify risks and sensitivities related to interpretation, clarity, completeness, and messaging in Board, provincial, and public reporting, and provide recommendations to mitigate risk and support defensible reporting.
- Manage competing priorities and timelines while responding to emerging issues, leadership requests, and reporting cycles.
- Collaborate with data, subject matter experts, and system leaders to ensure alignment between data, analysis, and narrative content across service areas.
- Identify and implement improvements to reporting processes, templates, tools, and documentation standards to enhance clarity, consistency, efficiency, and system coherence.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all relevant policies, regulations, and legislative requirements.

Major responsibilities The Senior Reporting & Strategic Writing Specialist plans, collaborates, leads pieces of, and supports the development of reporting and written materials from initial concept through to final production. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Writing and coordinating corporate, Board, provincial, and public-facing reports, including formal reporting, multi-year plans, executive summaries, and supporting documentation.
- Developing speaking notes, briefings, and key messages for senior leadership in Board-facing, public, and internal contexts.
- Translating complex data sets, analyses, and technical information into clear and accessible written content for a variety of audiences.
- Establishing and maintaining consistent writing standards, templates, and style guidelines across system reports.
- Collaborating with subject matter experts (e.g., school improvement portfolios, finance, HR, legal, planning) to ensure accuracy, clarity, and appropriate representation of data, information, tables, and visualizations.
- Working across multiple Service Units and portfolios to gather, synthesize, and align diverse inputs into cohesive narratives for Board and provincial reporting.
- Reviewing and editing materials to ensure clarity, coherence, tone, and alignment with system priorities and messaging.
- Responding to emerging issues or sensitivities related to reporting content and adapting materials as required.
- Contributing to continuous improvement in system reporting practices, tools, and documentation standards.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

- University degree in communications, journalism, English,



public administration, or a related field.
- Professional certification such as Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC), Project Management (PMP), or Data Analytics is an asset.
- 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in technical writing, reporting or communications.
- Experience developing complex, high-profile written materials for senior leadership or public-sector organizations.
- Experience synthesizing data, analysis, and technical information into clear and meaningful written content.
- Experience working within large, complex organizations and collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
- Experience with project management and coordination including leading pieces of large deliverables, coordinating timelines and contributors and managing multiple drafts and approvals.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

- Exceptional written communication skills with the ability to tailor content to multiple audiences, including senior leadership and public stakeholders.
- Strong ability to synthesize complex information and present it clearly, accurately, and concisely.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective relationships and credibility with senior leaders and system partners.
- Ability to identify risks, sensitivities, and implications in written materials and adjust messaging accordingly.
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, consistency, and quality
- Ability to provide constructive advice and guidance on written products and messaging.
- Demonstrated excellence working with Microsoft Office tools, including strong Word and Excel skills, proficiency with presentation software such as PowerPoint and graphic design software such as Canva, along with experience working within SharePoint environments.
- Professionalism, discretion, and the ability to operate effectively in a highly visible, publicly accountable environment.
