SCOC is currently accepting applications for a Temporary Full-Time Cook to provide maternity leave coverage. This is a temporary position from September 14, 2026, to September 22, 2027. Must be available to work minimum 40hrs/week, weekends and holidays.

Reporting to the Food Services Manager (FSM). This position is responsible for the management of an effective and safe food production, catering, presentation and service, ordering, inventory control, staff training and liaison and customer service within the Food Service Department. This is a Temporary Full-Time Cook – position as per bargaining Collective Agreement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Setting up equipment and supplies for food preparation.
- Prepare meals and snacks according to production sheets, recipes and other menu documents as provided.
- Providing prescribed diets, at appropriate temperatures and in portion-controlled quantities.
- Ensure all safety standards are followed and documented.
- In the absence of the Food Service Manager, assumes responsibility for departmental operations including menu. changes as necessary, requisitions and purchases food and other supplies from authorized supplies.
- Follow all Sanitation and Safety regulations. Assist in the maintenance of optimal safety standards to ensure the safety of residents and other staff.
- Follow all internal & external Policies & Procedures.
- Assist the FSM in the purchasing, receiving, checking and storage of foods and other supplies and maintain food records as required. Undertake inventory of food and supplies as directed by FSM.
- Receive Produce and Raw food on delivery days biweekly.
- Hours of work will be varied with 8 hour full or split shifts between 6am – 8pm.
- Ensure that cleaning and maintenance schedules, sanitary and safety procedures are carried out; report all equipment failures and breakdowns promptly to the FSM. Promptly correct any unsanitary/unsafe conditions.
- Assist the department to ensure an organized program of nutrition and hydration services to meet resident needs and provide safe and nutritious choices.
- Act as a liaison between staff families, guests and Management as required in absence of FSM.
- Attends in-services meetings. Completes and stay updated on in-house web-based learning on a daily/weekly basis.
- Works in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Long-Term Care Homes Act, and their regulations in performing duties in a safe manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Availability to work weekdays; every alternate weekends and Statutory Holidays on requirement basis.
- Follow collective agreement in terms of seniority as per Union: SEIU Service.
- A week’s work will include main shifts of Morning Cook, Evening Cook, Dishwashing, other duties and work performance as assigned for completion of required hours. Description will also demand serving in LTC or Independent Dining Room, washing cookware during performance of main shifts.
- Should be able to handle customers independently and multitask while, prepping, cooking and serving, managing POS from a line in an outlet for public and handling internal residents.
Qualifications: · Experience in institutional large quantity cooking.
· Possess a valid Safe Food Handling Certificate.
· Three years’ experience in volume food preparation,
catering and special events preparation.
· Graduate of a recognized college Culinary Program.
· Chef’s experience in a Long-Term Care Facility is an asset.
· Red Seal Chef designation is a requirement.
· Demonstrates a positive attitude necessary to meet the goals and Standards of the residence.
· Able to read therapeutic menus.
· Able to receive instructions and work with minimum supervision.
· Standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), pulling, pushing, bending, and moving heavy items on a daily basis.
· Exposure to hot and cold temperatures.
· Good communication skills both oral and written
· Experience working with intergenerational residents and guests.
· Knowledge of Food Safety; trained in H.A.C.C.P. and Sanitation programs
· Proof of current immunization for Covid with minimum 2 vaccinations.
· Able to provide a complete and current (within 3 months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check)
· Tuberculosis testing within the last 4 weeks; Steps 1 & 2; or an X-Ray from the previous 2 months showing a transparent result
