Position Summary The Transition House Counsellor (Child and Youth Support) provides specialized, trauma-informed support to children, youth and their caregivers accessing Iris Kirby House. The position is responsible for planning and delivering child and youth programming, providing emotional and behavioural support, promoting healthy development and resilience, and supporting positive parenting within a safe and empowering workplace.

As a member of the Transition House Counsellor team, the position also participates in the daily operation of the shelter, providing crisis intervention, resident support, advocacy and shelter coverage as required to ensure continuity of service and safe, effective operations.

Responsibilities

Child and Youth Support

- Provide trauma informed emotional, behavioural and developmental support to children and youth residing at Iris Kirby House.
- Plan, coordinate and facilitate age appropriate educational, recreational and therapeutic programming.
- Support children and youth in developing healthy coping skills, emotional regulation, resilience and positive social connections.
- Support parents and caregivers through education, guidance and positive parenting strategies.
- Assist with school attendance, homework, educational transitions and connections with community resources.
- Coordinate childcare, recreational outings, special events and seasonal programming.
- Liaise with schools, Child, Youth and Family Services and other community partners to support the needs of children and families.
- Maintain accurate documentation, program records and required reports.
- Participate in case management,



service planning and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of child and youth programming, community partnerships and public awareness initiatives.

Core Transition House Counsellor Responsibilities
- Provide trauma informed crisis intervention, advocacy and emotional support.
- Support shelter operations including intake, discharge, safety checks and household responsibilities when needed.
- Complete accurate documentation, client records and incident reports.
- Participate in shift handovers, staff meetings and required training.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the THC position.

Qualifications
- Degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, Psychology or a related field.
- One to two years of relevant experience in a residential, crisis or social service setting.
- Education and/or experience in Child and Youth Care, Early Childhood Education or child and youth programming is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of intimate partner and family violence, the cycle of abuse and the empowerment model.
- Understanding of trauma-informed practice, child development and harm reduction principles.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to remain calm, professional and responsive in crisis situations.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Crisis intervention or suicide intervention training is an asset.
- Valid Newfoundland and Labrador Driver's Licence.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
