Description The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Locum Veterinarian . This Part-time Temporary position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Locum UCVM Community Care Clinic Veterinarian reports to the Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs and Development, and works under the guidance of the Small Animal Community Veterinary Medicine Academic Staff and the Manager, Community Care Clinic (or designate).

This position supports the delivery of clinical services within the UCVM Community Care Clinic by providing casual/on call veterinarian coverage, often on short notice. The successful candidate will work provide operational oversight to maintain a safe, supportive clinic environment for community clients where DVM students practice patient care and clinical procedures.

The Locum UCVM Community Care Clinic Veterinarian will work collaboratively with faculty veterinarians, registered veterinary technologists, administrative staff, DVM students, and volunteers in a busy primary care clinic environment. Clinical activities will be conducted in accordance with approved clinical duties and Community Care Clinic protocols. Clinical decision-making will be exercised within the scope of demonstrated competence and under faculty oversight where appropriate.

Workload may vary based on clinic caseload, outreach activities, and operational requirements.

This role requires flexibility, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to balance patient care and client communication while maintaining a supportive environment for students.

Qualifications / Requirements:

- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited veterinary college
- Current registration and licensure with the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA)
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience practicing as a licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in small animal general practice, including preventive care, wellness medicine, outpatient case management, and stable urgent care
- Understanding of spectrum of care and contextualized care principles, including shared decision-making and cost-of-care discussions with clients
- Experience performing common general practice surgical procedures, including canine and feline spay/neuter surgeries, routine dentistry,



and common soft tissue surgery, is strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively alongside DVM students in a clinical setting while ensuring patient safety, standard of care delivery, and professional clinic workflow
- Excellent clinical judgment and a commitment to evidence-based veterinary medicine
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with clients, students, faculty, staff, and community partners
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary clinical team while fostering a respectful, inclusive, and supportive workplace
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and standard veterinary practice management software is considered an asset
