The Pharmacy Department at Unity Health Toronto has a mission to provide comprehensive, seamless, and patient-centered care to all patients and family we serve to improve quality and safety of their mediation therapy through collaboration, education, leadership, and innovation.

Pharmacy Technician Supervisor oversees Pharmacy technicians, Lead Pharmacy technician, and other support staff (e.g. technical grads, clerks) working within the main dispensary. In collaboration with Lead Pharmacy Technician(s) and Pharmacy Manager, the Supervisor coordinates the day-to-day activities including staffing, work assignments; provides leadership on QA activities, process improvements; and ensures that regulatory requirements are met for relevant parts of the medication system. The Supervisor also has administrative responsibilities for the technicians including: recruitment, performance review, and any HR related issues as directed by reporting manager.

Duties And Responsibilities

Ensure optimal main dispensary operations including drug and supply inventory

Ensure relevant equipment and facilities are properly maintained (with documentation) and adequate in quantity ; prepare purchase requisitions for approval by Pharmacy Manager

Assist nursing staff with medication system related tasks as needed such as narcotic key assignment, floor stock requests (in collaboration with Pharmacy manager).

Assist in management of drug shortages including execution of conservation strategies

Lead process improvement initiatives leading to better efficiency, safety, and / or lower overall costs

Liaise with other pharmacy team members to ensure that pharmacist who work in the dispensary are aware of processes; engage pharmacists in process improvements where needed, and report and discuss issues with Pharmacy Managers

Provide leadership to Pharmacy technicians/Lead Pharmacy technician and resolve issues, and escalation to Pharmacy Manager when needed





Evaluate main dispensary operations and physical space regularly to optimize safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness; where needed, lead working groups to implement approved changes and evaluate the change to further optimize where needed

Keep up to date on regulatory and practice standards of technicians, and ensure staff are aware and meet those standards and requirements; where needed collaborate with Pharmacy Manager to design, implement, and evaluate process improvement efforts

In collaboration with Pharmacy Manager, ensure policies and procedures are up to date and in compliance with other hospital and / or professional policies and regulations/legislation

Work with other hospital staff (e.g. Planning team, Nursing team) to address medication storage /stocking issues, medication system problems as required, including the design, relocation, and/or installation of current medication rooms that meet client, regulatory and professional standards;

In collaboration with Pharmacy Manager of Business Operations, review medication system spending and budget and report issues to relevant Managers

Assist in development of proposals/business cases/data analysis for new equipment or automation used in the dispensary; if approved, assist in their implementation and optimization

Participate in relevant corporate/site specific committees such as Medication system safety committee; assignment of such committees should be done in collaboration with Pharmacy Manager





Build effective environment for team work within the dispensary and with relevant external agencies (e.g. Centennial College)

Recruit technicians and support staff as needed in alignment with HR policies and regulatory credentialing; assist in coordination of orientation of new staff and ensure relevant departmental certifications are completed as appropriate

Conduct performance reviews of technicians and lead technician; Coach/motivate/manage as appropriate and escalation to Pharmacy manager for assistance when required

Receives, investigate and implement plans to deal with staff complaints/concerns, including providing feedback, coaching and learning plans; escalation to Pharmacy Manager when required

Manage HR or discipline related issues for technicians and lead technician, including coaching, and monitoring

Qualifications

Registered as Pharmacy technician with OCP

Pharmacy Technician Diploma

At least 5 years of experience as teaching hospital pharmacy technician

At least 1-2 years of leadership experience as technician, such as lead technician or compounding supervisor

Significant knowledge of hospital pharmacy and medication system

Skills to lead, facilitate, plan, problem-solve, time management, and good interpersonal skills
