Position Overview As a Project Estimator at Steelcon, you will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for complex steel projects, analyzing project specifications, and supporting our Canadian & US business development efforts through competitive bidding processes.
Key Responsibilities Estimation and Analysis
Prepare detailed cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and erection projects ranging from small to large projects
Analyze architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents to determine project scope and requirements
Calculate material quantities using steel detailing software and traditional takeoff methods
Develop comprehensive labor hour estimates based on project complexity, site conditions, and crew productivity rates
Evaluate equipment needs, crane requirements, and logistics costs for project execution
Project Management Support
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and operations teams to validate estimate assumptions
Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client presentations
Maintain and update historical cost databases and productivity metrics
Identify potential risks, value engineering opportunities, and constructability issues
Support contract negotiations and change order pricing throughout project lifecycle
Business Development
Actively identify, pursue, and bid on new project opportunities through market research, and client outreach efforts
Prepare professional prequalification and proposal package, including technical approaches and project schedules
Build and maintain relationships with clients, architects, general contractors, and suppliers
Track market conditions, material pricing trends, and competitor activity
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
0-2 years of relevant experience in construction cost estimating or a related discipline.
A foundational understanding of construction estimating processes.
General familiarity with construction specifications, drawings, materials, methods, and procedures.
A clear understanding of quantity takeoff, procurement, pricing, and bid-closing principles.
Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and completeness in all estimates.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subtrade partners, suppliers, and internal teams.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a agile environment.
Experience with estimating software.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project).
A willingness and aptitude for learning new technologies.
Primarily in office work environment
Location: Vaughan, ON
Hours of Work: Monday to Thursday 8:00am to 5:00pm, Friday 8:00am to 3:00pm
