Location : Onsite in Vaughan (Concord), ON + 30% travel to Canada and the US
About our client:
- Our client is a Canadian OEM that designs and builds high-performance rotating machinery for the wire, cable, umbilical, and hose industries. Its engineered equipment includes armouring, stranding, cabling, taping, and related material-handling systems installed at customer facilities across North America and internationally.
About the Role:
- The Field Service & Commissioning Technologist will support the complete lifecycle of this equipment—from electrical/mechanical assembly and factory testing through customer-site installation, PLC/HMI/drives commissioning, production startup, troubleshooting, training, and long-term service support. This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys combining controls programming, electrical troubleshooting, machine commissioning, mechanical problem-solving, and direct customer interaction.
Responsibilities:
- Install, assemble, commission, test, and validate custom-engineered machinery at the client's facilities and customer sites.
- Perform electrical and mechanical assembly, machine checkout, I/O verification, component replacement, alignment, and corrective repairs.
- Install, configure, troubleshoot, and modify Rockwell Allen-Bradley PLC, HMI, drive, and motion-control programs.
- Diagnose faults involving PLC logic, HMI communications, VFDs, servos, motors, encoders, sensors, relays, safety circuits, industrial networks, and electrical panels.
- Execute factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), dry-cycle testing, production trials, alarm validation, safety validation, and final customer handover.
- Troubleshoot mechanical systems including gearboxes, bearings, rotating equipment, pneumatic circuits, hydraulic components, actuators, conveyors, brakes, and material-handling systems.
- Support equipment upgrades, engineering changes, software updates, retrofits, and preventative-maintenance activities.
- Train customer operators, electricians, maintenance teams, and supervisors on equipment operation, safety, troubleshooting, and maintenance requirements.
- Produce explicit field-service reports, commissioning records, test plans, action lists, operating instructions, and technical documentation.
- Work closely with electrical, mechanical, software, production, and project-management teams to resolve field issues and improve machine reliability.
- Participate in root-cause analysis and feed field learnings back into product design, standard controls code, service procedures, and customer documentation.
- Travel approximately 30-50% throughout Canada and the United States, including overnight stays for installations, startups, emergency support, and customer training.
Job Requirements:
- Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Automation, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience in OEM machinery, industrial automation, field service, commissioning, controls engineering, or a comparable role.
- Demonstrated experience with Rockwell Allen-Bradley PLCs, ideally ControlLogix or CompactLogix, using Studio 5000 / RSLogix.
- Practical HMI experience, preferably FactoryTalk View ME/SE, including alarms, diagnostics, operator screens, and system troubleshooting.
- Practical drive and motion-control experience, including VFD setup, parameterization, tuning, motor control, servo systems, encoder feedback, and fault diagnosis.
- Strong electrical skills: reading schematics, control-panel wiring, I/O checkout, instrument/sensor troubleshooting,
safety circuits, relays, contactors, and motor-control systems.
- Strong mechanical skills: assembly, alignment, rotating equipment, bearings, gearboxes, pneumatics, hydraulics, actuators, conveyors, and machine troubleshooting.
- Experience with FAT/SAT, installation, startup, commissioning, production ramp-up, customer acceptance, and technical training.
- Ability to read electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic drawings and turn them into practical troubleshooting actions.
- Clear technical-writing and customer-communication skills.
- Valid Ontario G driver’s licence, valid passport, and unrestricted ability to travel to the United States.
- Ability to safely lift and handle up to 50 lbs, work around machinery, climb ladders/stairs, and use hand and power tools.
Preferred qualifications:
- Siemens PLC/HMI/drives experience, such as TIA Portal, WinCC, S7-1200, or S7-1500.
- Experience with cable, wire, converting, web handling, packaging, material handling, robotics, motion control, or other continuous/rotating industrial machinery.
- Experience with EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, PROFINET, industrial Ethernet, remote access, and industrial-network troubleshooting.
- Experience with ABB, Fanuc, KUKA, or other industrial robots.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and move up to 50 lbs. on a routine basis
- Ability to climb ladders and stairways regularly throughout the work shift
- Ability to observe conditions and others as a safety attendant, staying alert while seated for long periods as needed
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and other tools and equipment in a safe and controlled manner
- Ability to perform inspections of site, tools, and equipment
- Ability to perform behavioral observations focused on safety and process improvement
- Ability to follow safety protocols and to report any incident, unsafe act, or unsafe condition immediately to the site supervisor and safety manager
