Locomotive Mechanic Location:

Permanent, Full-Time Compensation:

$41.00 $45.00 per hour, based on experience

Position Overview We are looking for a skilled

Locomotive Mechanic

to join a mechanical maintenance team in Red Deer, Alberta. This is a hands-on role focused on keeping locomotives safe, reliable, and operational.

The successful candidate will inspect, service, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair locomotive mechanical and electrical systems. Candidates with experience working on

locomotives, diesel engines, heavy equipment, trucks, or electromechanical systems

are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Inspect locomotives and related equipment according to railway regulations, maintenance schedules, and company procedures.

Perform preventive and scheduled maintenance on locomotive systems and components.

Service diesel engines, including:

Oil and filter changes

Turbocharger inspections

Air and air-compressor filter replacement

Lubrication and greasing

Fuel system and linkage maintenance

Troubleshoot, test, repair, and replace mechanical and electrical components.

Repair and replace locomotive components such as:

Wheels and trucks

Traction motors

Springs

Couplers and draft gear

Gear cases

Cylinder assemblies

Heating equipment

Perform daily locomotive servicing, including watering, oiling, lubrication, cleaning, and general equipment checks.

Diagnose equipment problems using mechanical and electrical schematics, technical manuals, and diagnostic information.

Complete maintenance, inspection, and service reports and provide documentation to supervisors or the Mechanical Department.

Follow all railway, workplace, and environmental safety requirements.

Maintain a clean, organized,



and safe work area.

Travel to other locations in Western Canada when required for maintenance or service work.

Qualifications & Requirements

High school diploma or GED.

Diploma, apprenticeship training, or relevant experience in

diesel mechanics, electromechanics, heavy equipment, truck and transport, or a related trade .

Previous locomotive maintenance or repair experience is strongly preferred.

Completion of a

3 5 year apprenticeship program

or at least

four years of verifiable industry experience .

Journeyperson or Red Seal certification as a

Heavy Equipment Technician (HET)

or

Truck and Transport Technician

is preferred.

Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical schematics, blueprints, service manuals, and technical documentation.

Knowledge of

Transport Canada regulations

related to locomotive inspection and maintenance is an asset.

Knowledge of railway environmental and safety requirements is an asset.

Strong safety awareness and positive decision-making skills in a safety-sensitive work environment.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Valid

Class 5 driver's licence

with a satisfactory driving record.

Willingness to work shifts, overtime, emergency service calls, and assignments at different locations.





Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Physically capable of performing demanding mechanical work, including regularly lifting up to

50 lbs.

and occasionally up to

85 lbs. .
