The job works under the direction and general supervision of theprincipaland receives functional guidance from the Supervisor, Early Learning.The jobfocusses onthe development, programmingand supervision of childrenfive years and underin educational and alternative settings.The job is responsible for all aspects of primary care and supports the nurturing of growth in children.
The incumbentisexpected to create early learning experiences and environments thatsupport learning through play. The incumbent guides play and documents children’s progress. The incumbent collaborates with the school team, and in particular the Half-Day Kindergarten teachers where Extensions programing is offered.
The job participates in planning inquiry-based programming that follows the Alberta Early Learning and Care Framework (FLIGHT) and is responsible for providing an enriched environment.
Job Responsibilities and Activities
1. Planning,implementationand delivery
- Explore early learning play experiences including art, music and drama
- Collaborate in creation of developmentally appropriate play experiences
- Consult and collaborate withteacherand multi-disciplinary team (MDT) members to ensurecontinuity with strategies andsupportsfor children with diverse needs
- Create experiences to supportexploration of the world around us, supporting language and communication,with a learn-through-play philosophy
- Assist in the design andadaptionof customized programming to address cultural needs
- Design and develop programming based on student interest andin collaborationwiththe school team
- Use the FLIGHTframeworkto plan experiences that enhances development and dispositions to learn
- Gather program resources and materials
2. Communication and documentation
- Maintain child documentation for visible learning (I.E – learning stories and portfolios as outlined in theFLIGHTframework)
- Communicate with families to share child’s experiences and developmental growth
- Participate in meetings with educational and multi-disciplinary teams to address problems and discuss strategies
- Mediate with children, families and staff to resolve problems
- Collaborate with outside agencies
3. Care and support
- Provide personal and physical care
- Provide social and language development support
- Work closely with children to nurture relationships and foster growth
4. Professionaldevelopment
- Buildrelationships with post-secondary institutes to facilitate student field placements
- Participate in relevant opportunities to enhance the early learning and care field
- Participate in sessions and regular call backs in collaboration with the teacher
- Maintain technical knowledge through a range of activities
Job Qualifications – Knowledge, Experience, and Competencies
- Diploma in Early Childhood, plus three years of directly related experience
- Early Childhood Supervisor Certification
- Knowledge of early learning specialization including child development, communication, emergent curriculum and environments
- Knowledge of the challenges and strengths of English Language Learners (ELL) and settlement services in the community.
- Knowledge of program planning and project management techniques
- Knowledge of multi-media, technology and equipment, Microsoft programs including excel, outlook and databases
- Knowledge of records management principles, the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), and the Access to Information Act (ATIA)
- Understanding of research and data analysis principles and techniques
- Knowledge of workplace safety and awareness of Occupational Health and Safety regulations
- General knowledge of the division and department operations, business, school systems and structures
- Strong teamwork skills with the abilityto work independentlyandcollaborativelywithschoolteams
- Strongproblem-solving skills and the ability to influence decisions
- Strongtime management and organizational skills with the ability to manage conflictingpriorities
- Strongverbal and written communication skills withthe ability to communicate technical information
