Main Purpose & Function
The Recreation Programmer II performs supervisory work and is responsible for taking the lead on recreation programming and administrative work in the development, coordination and implementation of community recreation programs and events. The position assumes responsibility for directing segments of an approved community recreation program, provides guidance and recommendations to community program committees, recruits and instructs part‑time staff, schedules, evaluates and reports on programs, performs moderately complex administrative duties and acts for a superior on an assigned shift. The portfolio includes Aquatics and Community Recreation programming.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for the overall planning and implementation of programs and services, assumes responsibility forcoordinating and directing in one or more areas

Makes recommendations on the development, implementation and discontinuation of aquatic and recreationprograms and events

Coordinates and processes the staffing and administration aspects of rental permits for the swimming pool andcommunity centre

Provides guidance and information to community groups and committees related to the work performed; promotes interest and participation in program activities; establishes and maintains liaison with agencies and communitygroups

Recruits, instructs and directs group leaders, part‑time staff and volunteers, and supervises the work of other full‑time and part‑time staff involved in approved recreation programs, provides an orientation to same

Recruits and supervises program instructors and contractors, ensures that all required operating procedures aremet, including proper screening of those working with vulnerable populations

Responsible for the onboarding, training, education, evaluation and development of the aquatic staff team





In consultation with city wide aquatics, arranges for and schedules space within the assigned facilities or area

Participates in the review of recreation policies and procedures

Monitors programs, keeps statistical records and prepares narrative evaluations of programs

Maintains a variety of operating and administrative records, oversees annual operating budget and monthlyfinancial reporting

Initiates requisitions for materials and equipment within budgetary limits and arranges for the disposal of unsafe,worn or obsolete equipment

Prepares publicity material for the promotion of programs, services or events

Enforces rules and regulations and deals consistently and tactfully with groups or individuals who fail to observethese and acts in the absence of a superior, on an assigned shift

Ability to assess the need for and initiate work requests for mechanical and/or facility repairs

Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

This position is located at Renfrew Park Pool and Lord Byng Pool, however the successful candidate must be prepared to be placed and/or accept transfers to other facilities in the organization based on operational needs.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

Post‑secondary degree in Recreation or a related discipline and sound experience related to the work; OR,completion of a post‑secondary degree in any discipline or an approved diploma course in recreation, plusconsiderable experience related to the work or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of a planned aquatic recreation program.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and practices involved in conducting aquatic
recreation programs. Working knowledge of the policies of the Board of Parks and Recreations applied to aquaticrecreation.

Working knowledge of the procedures and programming requirements in at least one and preferably more of thefollowing areas: amateur sports, physical fitness, arts and crafts, aquatics, ice surface, and social, cultural oradapted programming

Working knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and recreational instruction.

The ability to organize, promote and direct others in a variety of group recreational activities.





The ability to provide guidance to aquatic user groups and to promote interest and participation in programactivities.

The ability to recruit, instruct, provide orientation, assign, and review the work of regular full time, regular part timeand auxiliary aquatic staff

The ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public and maintain control and exercise discipline with tact andconsistency.

The ability to maintain statistical, financial and clerical records and write reports.

Skill in the use of recreational equipment and the performance of various recreational activities.

Awareness and responsiveness to the dynamic social setting we support throughout our centers.

Driver’s License and Record Checks:

A valid B.C. driver’s license is required.

The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out jobresponsibilities.

Local area travel and transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Board of Parksand Recreation and Driver Services

Candidates must attach the following records and satisfy the City’s driving requirements to be considered for this role:

Copy of your five‑year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14 days of thisposting

Copy of your five‑year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14 days of this posting

If you have less than five years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/countryabstract and claims history

A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.
