Climbing Wall Volunteers aid with general duties associated with the Westside climbing wall, including belaying patrons during open climbing times and assisting instructors in climbing programs for children 5-12Y.
Responsibilities:
- Be aware of the environment and exercise appropriate safety awareness and judgement
- Belay patrons in a safe and controlled way
- Welcome participants and patrons as they enter the space and direct questions appropriately
- Actively participate in program activities and interact positively with climbers of all ages
- Assist participants in developing and practicing new skills
- Help patrons in and out of harnesses assigned by climbing wall staff
- Assist staff in making the climbing wall a safe and fun environment during both open and program times
- Set up and put away equipment such as harnesses and carabiners
- Assist with cleaning the space and supplies
- Know how to assist in safety and emergency procedures
- Check messages and communicate regularly with supervisors
- Log hours on the appropriate time sheet
- Climb the wall during non-busy times to practice skills and become familiar with route layouts
- Be reliable and punctual (arrive ready for shift in proper uniform)

- Willing to learn current processes and follow procedures
- Enthusiastic, helpful, and welcoming to all staff and patrons
- Mature and responsible, with a clear understanding that others' safety depends on proper belaying technique
- Able to learn quickly and continuously practice and refine skills
- Open to feedback from staff and able to implement it
Work Term:
- September – June.
- Evenings and weekends.
- 2 shifts/week. Shifts are 2-3 hours long.
Qualifications/ Skills Required:
- Between 13 and 17 years of age
- Completion of minimum of Emergency First Aid with CPR C or Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion certification
- Completion of Volunteer Training – Provided by Westside.
