Skating Program Volunteers assist leaders with preparing and implementing a variety of skating programs for children ages 3-5Y or 6-12Y. Volunteers are required to skate and should be comfortable on the ice.
Responsibilities:
- Review lesson plans to be aware of the activities scheduled for that day
- Welcome participants and patrons as they enter the space or program
- Actively participate in program activities and interact positively with children
- Assist participants in developing and practicing new skills
- Aid in the set-up and take-down of equipment associated with the program
- Supervise participants and ensure they are following safety rules and guidelines both on and off the ice
- Know how to assist in emergency procedures
- Model appropriate behavior: listen to the leader(s), sit with the group during instructions, etc.
- Help with demonstrations or instructions as requested by the leader(s)
- Give positive feedback to participants
- Check messages and communicate regularly with supervisors
- Log hours on the appropriate time sheet
- Arrive on time and ready for shift in proper uniform, including a CSA-certified winter helmet and properly fitted skates (volunteer must provide their own)
Qualities:
- Willing to learn recent processes and follow procedures
- Enthusiastic and a positive role model for children
- Comfortable and confident on the ice
Work Term:
- September – March.
- Evenings and weekends
- 2 shifts/week. Shifts are 2-3 hours long.
Qualifications/ Skills Required:
- Between 13 and 17 years of age
- Completion of minimum of Emergency First Aid with CPR C or Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion Certification
- Completion of Volunteer Training – Provided by Westside
- Proficient skating ability
