About SM Professional Services LLP
SM Professional Services LLP is a Saskatoon-based accounting firm providing accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, tax compliance, and advisory services to individuals, small and medium-sized businesses, corporations, and not-for-profit organizations.
We are seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Accountant who can manage client files with increasing independence while maintaining high standards for accuracy, organization, client service, and professional conduct.
Position Summary The Accountant will be responsible for preparing bookkeeping and accounting records, financial statements, corporate and personal tax returns, GST/PST filings, payroll-related filings, and other client deliverables.
This is a hands-on public practice position. The successful candidate should be comfortable working on multiple client files simultaneously, communicating directly with clients, identifying missing or unusual information, and taking increasing ownership of assignments from receipt of information through completion.
The position is well suited to an accountant who wants broad exposure to public practice and the opportunity to develop into a trusted client-facing professional.
Key ResponsibilitiesAccounting & Financial Reporting
- Prepare year-end working paper files and adjusting journal entries.
- Prepare compilation engagement financial statements in accordance with applicable professional standards.
- Review general ledgers, trial balances, balance sheet accounts, and income statement accounts for completeness and reasonableness.
- Perform bank, credit card, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and other account reconciliations.
- Prepare and maintain supporting schedules for significant financial statement accounts.
- Identify unusual transactions, accounting errors, missing information, and potential tax or compliance issues.
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting for clients.
Corporate & Personal Tax
- Prepare Canadian corporate income tax returns (T2).
- Prepare personal income tax returns (T1).
- Prepare T4, T5, and other information returns as required.
- Prepare tax working papers and supporting schedules.
- Assist with tax planning calculations and research under the direction of the Partners.
- Review CRA Notices of Assessment and Reassessment and identify discrepancies.
- Assist with CRA correspondence, review requests,
and other compliance matters.
Client File Management
- Manage assigned client files and monitor outstanding information and deadlines.
- Communicate directly with clients to request documents and clarify transactions.
- Follow up on outstanding information in a professional and timely manner.
- Maintain organized electronic working papers and client documentation.
- Document significant issues, conclusions, and discussions within the client file.
- Escalate significant accounting, tax, compliance, or client-service issues to the Partners.
- Complete assignments within established budgets and deadlines.
Client Service
- Develop professional working relationships with clients.
- Respond to routine accounting and tax questions within the scope of the position.
- Explain accounting and tax matters to clients in clear, practical language.
- Maintain confidentiality of all client and firm information.
- Provide reliable and responsive service consistent with the firm's professional standards.
QualificationsRequired
- Diploma or bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field.
- Practical understanding of Canadian accounting and taxation.
- Experience preparing financial statements and/or year-end working paper files.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while recognizing when consultation is required.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality.
Preferred
- Previous experience with a Canadian public accounting firm.
- Experience preparing T1 and T2 income tax returns.
- Experience with GST/HST and Saskatchewan PST.
- Experience with QuickBooks Online and/or Sage accounting software.
- Experience with Canadian tax preparation and working-paper software.
- Experience preparing compilation engagements.

Compensation & Professional Development SM Professional Services LLP offers a compensation structure designed to reward both professional development and increased responsibility.
- Base salary depending on experience, education, technical skills, and ability to independently manage client files.
- Performance-based bonus based on individual contribution, quality of work, productivity, client service, and overall firm performance.
- Opportunities for increased compensation as the employee develops the ability to independently manage client relationships and complete files with reduced Partner involvement.
As the Accountant develops, a key measure of progression will be the ability to take ownership of client files from start to completion, resolve routine issues independently, communicate directly with clients, and reduce the level of Partner involvement required on routine engagements.
