This role brings engineering expertise into the sales process to ensure key-account customers receive accurate and responsive integration support. This position is central to Iris Dynamics’ mission of making motion control radically easier for engineers. By supporting sales enablement, customer integrations, and technical communication, the Applications Engineer will directly contribute to our strategic goals of expanding adoption of standard products, strengthening long-term customer relationships, and improving the clarity of our technical resources.
The role requires close collaboration with Sales, Product Management, Support, and Engineering teams, but remains part of the Sales organization. Success in this role is determined by revenue generated by the sales team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Understand key-account requirements and translate them into effective implementation strategies. This role will be intimately familiar with customers’ systems and goals.
- Assist customers with designs that integrate Orca Motors into their systems (brackets, mounting options, mechanical advantage set ups, etc).
- Develop application expertise in a particular customer industry (e.g. Industrial Automation, Autonomous Vehicles).
Applications Engineers will position themselves as thought leaders in the use of linear motors in their industry.
- Become the Iris expert on assigned customers’ systems. Use this knowledge to inform sales, manufacturing and product planning.
- Serve as the technical point of contact for assigned customer accounts within the Sales team.
- Respond directly to technical questions from key-account customers, ensuring prompt and accurate answers.
- Maintain involvement with integrated customers for technical continuity as needed.
- Ensure customer feature requests are shared with the product development team. Advocate for these requests and take responsibility for their execution when sharing updates with customers.
- Collaborate with Marketing and Support to generate technical content for web, written, trade show and video materials.
- Capture recurring technical questions and integration challenges to improve documentation, FAQs, and marketing content.
- Support product demonstrations with technical validation when required.
- Support sales activities with technical presentations, demonstrations, documentation, and participation in customer site visits and trade shows.
- Travel occasionally for trade shows and customer visits, primarily within North America, with potential for global travel.
- Perform other job duties as needed.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field (required).
- Strong understanding of electromechanical systems, mechatronics, or automation technologies.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear explanations for customers.
- Candidates must be living in the Greater Victoria area and able to commute to the company office.
Experience:
- 5+ years in engineering roles with exposure to customer-facing work.
- Experience in technical sales, applications engineering, or similar customer interface positions.
- Demonstrated history of leading projects involving external customers.
- Background in creating or supporting technical marketing content considered an asset.
- Previous work in industries such as automation, robotics, aerospace, or high-tech manufacturing is preferred.
Skills:
- Strong technical problem-solving ability.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Highly organized with strong project management abilities.
- Comfortable with technical presentations, demonstrations, and customer-facing communication.
- Proficient with CAD/3D modeling software and technical documentation.
- Familiar with CRM systems (e.g., HubSpot) and common business software.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.

Must be able to travel on an occasional basis. As we are a growing company, supervisory experience will also be considered an asset.
