The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. Job Information
The purpose of this position is to obtain the combination of education and work experience required to obtain journeyman certification. The required work experience will be obtained by assisting in carpentry work and preventative maintenance checks on all Government owned and occupied buildings and works in the Fort Smith region. Located in Fort Smith and reporting the Facilities & Maintenance Coordinator, this position performs carpentry work and carpentry preventative maintenance checks on all Government owned and occupied buildings and works in the Fort Smith region. This position assists in completing carpentry works in accordance with work orders,
plans and specifications to ensure Government buildings and works are well maintained. This position also assists in completing capital projects minor works as well as assisting in reviewing work completed by contractors to ensure compliance with plans and specifications and the National Building Code.
Continued employment as an apprentice is conditional upon the succesful completion of the required hours of experience, coursework and exam for each level in the apprenticeship program. Formal Trade Instruction Courses will be attended in either Fort Smith or Alberta for at least one 8-week period per apprenticeship level.
Key Responsibilities
- Over the course of the Apprenticeship, you will learn to inspect building structure and components to ensure building is in satisfactory condition.
- Will learn to complete carpentry work in accordance with work orders, plans and specifications to ensure Government buildings and works are well maintained.
- Learn to renovate Government buildings, in accordance with work orders, plans and specifications.
- Learn to complete records for all maintenance and repairs to buildings and will learn to preform other duties.
Key Qualifications
- Completion of English 10, Math 10, Science Grade 10 OR the equivalent.
- Successful completion of a Trades Entrance exam.
- Continued employment as an apprentice is conditional upon the successful completion of the required hours of experience, coursework and exam for each level in the apprenticeship program.
- Class 5 Driver's License.
