Job Profile

The City is seeking an Arena Maintainer to help operate and maintain safe, clean, welcoming and well-functioning recreation facilities. This role is responsible for ice-making and ice maintenance, building and equipment upkeep, customer service and facility safety. The successful candidate will work independently, exercise sound judgement and represent the City professionally while interacting with user groups, contractors, staff and the general public.

What you will be doing

- Operate and maintain ice-resurfacing equipment.
- Make, maintain and monitor ice surfaces, including checking ice temperature and thickness.
- Operate, monitor and complete routine checks of refrigeration systems and related equipment.
- Respond appropriately to equipment alarms, malfunctions and operating issues.
- Perform cleaning, minor repairs, painting and general building maintenance.
- Complete ice-resurfacer and refrigeration logs, safety documentation and other required records.
- Mix and apply chemicals safely according to established procedures.
- Identify hazardous conditions and take corrective action or report concerns.
- Support safe facility operations during programs, rentals and public events.
- Provide information and assistance to user groups and visitors.
- Address complaints, respond to challenging situations and escalate issues when appropriate.
- Remove garbage and recyclables, including biohazardous materials such as used needles, using proper procedures and protective equipment.
- Assist with opening and closing procedures, emergency responses and facility evacuations.
- Operate small equipment, power tools, hand tools and other maintenance equipment.
- Provide guidance and direction to part time Arena Attendants, students, volunteers and contractors as required.
- Travel between assigned facilities or other City locations when needed.





Education

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Plus additional program/course(s) of up to six months or equivalent

Basic Refrigeration Certificate required

Possess valid “G” Driver’s License required with a driver’s abstract acceptable to the City (4 or less demerit point may be considered acceptable, considering the nature of infractions).

Candidates should also have, or be willing to obtain, relevant training or certification such as:

- ORFA Certified Arena Refrigeration Plant Technician and/or TSSA “B” Refrigeration certification.
- Certified Ice Technician Designation.
- Propane handling certification.
- Working-at-heights, elevated-platform and fall-arrest training.
- First Aid, CPR and AED certification.
- WHMIS, confined-space and other applicable health-and-safety training.

Equivalent combinations of education, training and experience may be considered.

Minimum Requirements

- Several seasons of experience in arena operations, ice maintenance, facility maintenance or a related environment is preferred.
- Experience operating an ice resurfacer is an asset.
- Experience monitoring refrigeration or HVAC equipment is an asset.
- Experience performing cleaning, repairs and preventative maintenance is preferred.
- Experience providing customer service in a busy public facility is required.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions within established procedures.
- Experience working with diverse user groups and responding respectfully to difficult or potentially confrontational situations.

Your compensation

This position is within the outside workers union salary schedule Grade 4 and has an hourly range of:

- Starting Rate: $32.67
- 12 Month Rate: $33.68




- 24 Month Rate: $34.69

This position includes benefits and other entitlements in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.

Hours of Work

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position. The schedule may include rotating day, afternoon, evening and weekend shifts, depending on facility programming and seasonal requirements. Scheduled 5:00am – 1:00am, 7 days, Up to 3 shifts/day Employees may work year-round and may also perform seasonal duties at other City operations. The role involves work both indoors and outdoors, including exposure to cold temperatures, moisture and varying weather conditions.

- Hespeler Arena
- Preston Auditorium
- Galt Arena
- Dickson Arena

The employee may be required to travel to other City facilities or worksites.
