The Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Law and Society/Sociology of Law. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have earned a PhD in Sociology or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching in Law and Society / Sociology of Law.
We seek candidates whose research advances sociological understandings of law across the breadth of sociolegal scholarship. We welcome applications from scholars employing a wide range of theoretical, comparative, historical, and/or transnational approaches whose work complements and enhances our existing departmental strengths.
Candidates must also demonstrate expertise in quantitative methods and/or mixed methods research, together with the ability to teach undergraduate quantitative methods and/or research methods.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, which can be demonstrated through a record of publications/forthcoming publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals that meet high international standards; the submitted research statement; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and robust endorsements from referees.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, including the required materials outlined below, and strong letters of reference.
RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
The successful candidate will teach in the undergraduate program at the University of Toronto Mississauga and contribute to the Department's Criminology, Law & Society program. They will also contribute to undergraduate instruction in quantitative and/or mixed methods and strengthen sociology-wide research and teaching in Law and Society. The successful candidate will be a member of the Graduate Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto and will teach and supervise students in the tri-campus graduate program.
In addition, the successful candidate will be assigned a teaching and service load.
HIRING SALARY RANGE The expected salary range is $138,000 - $178,000 CAD per annum, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
