CAD Drafter / Electrical Technician / Electrical Technologist – Switchgear Systems
Metalec Sudbury Inc. , Val Caron, ON
Role Overview
Metalec Sudbury Inc. is looking for a dependable, organized team member to produce accurate 2D drawings and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for our underground mining electrical products.
Whether your background is in CAD drafting, an Electrical Engineering Technician or Technology program, the primary responsibility remains the same: creating explicit drawings and keeping our production data accurate. We are willing to train you on our specific product lines—what matters most to us is strong core fundamentals, attention to detail, a willingness to ask questions, and a long-term commitment to growing with our team.
Primary Responsibilities
- Drafting & Design: Prepare and update 2D AutoCAD drawings (shop drawings, customer approvals, and layout schematics) for mine electrical switchgear.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Work with mechanical designers and manufacturing staff to ensure drawings reflect efficient fabrication methods and production schedule.
- ERP & Data Management: Build and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), part numbers, hardware specs, and revision histories within our ERP database.
- Quality Control: Review drawing packages for accuracy before releasing them to the shop floor; update drawings based on production feedback and field experience, and aid with final shop testing and document review.
- Documentation Support: Help develop and maintain product catalogs, manual sets, and testing documentation.
Qualifications & Core Competencies
- AutoCAD Skills: Proficient in 2D drafting, with attention to detail, and accuracy.
- Computer Literacy: Comfortable managing structured data, lists, and part records in an ERP/Excel workplace.
- Analytical Mindset:
Comfortable troubleshooting design issues and researching solutions when answers aren't immediately obvious.
- Work Ethic & Mindset: Highly organized, open to constructive feedback, dependable, and committed to a long-term career in Northern Ontario.
Pay Scale & Leveling (Based on Education & Experience) Compensation is tiered based on candidate credentials, direct switchgear knowledge, and the level of technical autonomy brought to the role:
- Tier 1: CAD Drafter / Junior Technician ($52,000 – $56,000 / year)
- Profile: Certificate/Diploma in Drafting, or recent graduate from a 2-year Electrical Technician program. Strong AutoCAD basics, but requires hands-on training for ERP setups, BOM builds, and switchgear domain knowledge.
- Tier 2: Intermediate CAD Drafter / Electrical Technician ($56,000 – $62,000 / year)
- Profile: 1 to 3 years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment, OR a 2-year Electrical Technician diploma with proven shop-floor/BOM drafting experience. Requires minimal supervision on standard 2D layouts.
- Tier 3: Electrical Technologist / Senior Specialist ($62,000 – $68,000+ / year)
- Profile: 3-year Electrical Engineering Technology diploma (or equivalent experience) with direct exposure to industrial electrical systems, switchgear, or mining equipment. Capable of independently building complex BOMs, assisting with schematic design, and managing documentation projects from day one.
