The Role:
The Career Practitionerassists primarily Afghan immigrants who are unemployed and underemployed and looking for a job or training. The Career Practitioner reports to the Program Manager and is responsible for assisting clients to become self-sufficient in their career development processes through identifying and meeting their employment goals by helping them to return to work, find new work, or access employment and training opportunities.
The Career Development Practitioner will adhere to all Centre for Newcomers Policies and Procedures, Alberta Community and Social Services regulations, Career Development Association of Alberta’s (CDAA) professional ethics and ensure confidentiality of client information and client records as provided for under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP).
Responsibilities include:
- Providing one-on-one career and employment counseling services to clients in first language (Dari, Pashto, Farsi) and or English.
- Conducting needs assessment and helping clients develop training and occupational goals, set doable employment plan and access relevant employment resources.
- Facilitating in person and online job search workshops such as resume writing, interview preparation, and labour market information among others.
- Providing continuing support to clients through regular follow-ups, either by phone, in person or online and conducting other job search coaching services as needed.
- Managing client files by maintaining and completing accurate paper and electronic files for each client, appropriate to the level of service provided and as policy and procedures outline.
- Assisting and connecting clients with employers for job or hiring opportunities.
- Providing employment information services to Job Search Hub (JSH) clients and referring them to relevant resources/services for further career and employment assistance.
- Conducting and or participating in cross-program/sectoral outreach activities in collaboration with other service providers.
- Assisting with report preparation and data generation as required by the program.
- Contributing to the advancement and achievement of functional team goals in coordination with the other team members.
Qualifications:
- Education: A university degree in a relevant or related field; a Career Development Certificate or CCDP designation is an asset.
- Technical: Excellent computer and internet skills,Proficient use of Zoom, Google Drive, MS Teams or other digital platforms; driver’s licence is an asset.
- Experience/Results Oriented: Experience working with high-need immigrants; proven experience in employer connections, networking and labor market information and research.
- Communication: Adapts communication to respond to the audience or situational requirements. In addition to English, applicants will have fluency in various Dari, Pashto, Farsi and English languages.
Other Requirements:
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
Pay: $28.00 per hour

Education:
- Bachelor's Degree (required)
Experience:
- working with high-need immigrants: 1 year (required)
Licence/Certification:
- Career Development Certificate or CCDP designation (preferred)
