SUMMARY:
The Child and Youth Care Worker (CYCW) supports the emotional, social, and behavioural development of children and youth in the K–12 education system. Working collaboratively with school staff, families, and community agencies, the CYCW provides direct support to students experiencing personal, social, or behavioral challenges. The goal is to foster safe, inclusive, and supportive school environments that promote student well-being and academic success.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Diploma or Degree in Child and Youth Care (CYC), Social Work or Social Sciences, or a related field.
Additional training in trauma-informed practice, restorative practices, or crisis intervention is an asset.
Minimum 2 years of experience working with children or youth in educational or community settings.
Experience supporting students with diverse needs, including behavioural, developmental, or mental health and substance use challenges.
Understanding of child and adolescent development.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Familiarity with inclusive education practices and relevant legislation (e.g., BC School Act, Human Rights Code).
Incorporating Indigenous knowledge to provide culturally respectful, trauma-informed care, supporting the identity, healing, and well-being of Indigenous children and youth.
Demonstrates the ability to work independently, managing tasks efficiently while maintaining a high standard of care and support for children and youth
DUTIES:
Build trusting, supportive relationships with students.
Support students in setting and working towards achievable social, emotional and behavioural goals.
Supervises student(s) both on and off the school campus. Provide after-school support and or programs as per student needs.
Implement individualized support strategies to address behavioural, emotional, and social needs.
Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, and conflict resolution as needed.
Facilitate or co-facilitate group activities or programs focused on prevention including but not limited to social-emotional learning, self-regulation, and life skills.
Work closely with classroom teachers, educational assistants, counselors, administrators, and other school personnel.
Participate in school-based team meetings and provide input into Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs).
Liaise with parents/caregivers and community professionals (e.g., social workers, mental health clinicians, Indigenous support workers) to support student success.
Promote positive school climate and inclusive practices.
Coordinates and implements school food/meal program as applicable.
Support classroom and school-wide strategies for behaviour management and student engagement.
Assist in implementing school-wide social-emotional learning frameworks.
Keep accurate and confidential records of student progress and interactions.
Prepare reports as required by school administration or district student services.
Manages expenses, mileage; applies for community grants and bursaries; assists with registration in extracurricular programs.
Provide community-based outreach services including submitting referrals to outside agencies, arranging appointments, facilitating recreational opportunities, and supporting students and families to access resources and programming.
Other Job-Related Duties as Required.
Build trusting, supportive relationships with students.
Transparent Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector Screening).
Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License. Safe driving record; required to transport students in personal vehicle. ( Candidates cannot have more than 6 points in the last 3 years on their driving record nor any suspensions, prohibitions, or convictions in the last 5 years ).
Valid First Aid/CPR Certification (may be required).
Additional certifications or course work may be required for specific programs.
- Applies for Take a Hike Program Only - Participates in all aspects of the Take a Hike Program including multi-day overnight camping trips (such as hiking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, rope course, etc.), student volunteer program and various events; contributes to risk management plans for all outdoor pursuits; and, assists in leading all expeditions and out-day excursions.
Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.
Demonstrates the ability to work independently, managing tasks efficiently while maintaining a high standard of care and support for children and youth.
Knowledge of WCB and WHMIS regulations. Safe work practices.
