Job Summary
Family Forever Inc. is seeking compassionate, reliable, professional, and motivated Child & Youth Care Workers – Casual/Relief to join our team.
This is a community-based hybrid role combining 1:1 Child & Youth Support, Supervised Family Visitation, and Client Transportation. Depending on client needs and operational requirements, employees may be assigned to one or a combination of these service areas.
Please note: “Hybrid” refers to the combination of different community-based service assignments. This is not a remote or work-from-home position.
The Child & Youth Care Worker will provide direct support, supervision, guidance, and transportation to children and youth in a variety of community and care settings. Assignments may include providing individualized 1:1 support, supporting children or youth experiencing emotional or behavioural challenges, supervising family visits, participating in community activities, and safely transporting clients between approved locations.
Workers may support children and youth with diverse or complex emotional, behavioural, developmental, social, or situational needs. The successful candidate will promote safety, stability, positive development, independence, healthy relationships, and emotional well-being while maintaining appropriate skilled boundaries and confidentiality.
This role requires individuals who are flexible, dependable, comfortable working independently in the community, and able to transition between different types of assignments based on client and organizational needs.
The successful candidate will utilize trauma-informed, client-centred, and strengths-based approaches while collaborating professionally with children, youth, families, caregivers, caseworkers, agency staff, and other professionals.
Important: This position requires employees to have access to a reliable personal vehicle and to be comfortable transporting children and youth as part of their regular job duties.
Responsibilities1:1 Child & Youth Support
- Provide direct 1:1 support and supervision to children and youth according to their individual needs, service plans, care plans, and safety plans.
- Develop positive, supportive, and professional relationships with children and youth while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Support emotional regulation, communication, social skills, daily living skills, independence, problem-solving, and positive decision-making.
- Engage children and youth in age-appropriate recreational, educational, cultural, social, and community-based activities.
- Support children and youth experiencing emotional, behavioural, developmental, or situational challenges.
- Implement established care plans, safety plans, behavioural strategies, and client-specific support plans.
- Utilize trauma-informed approaches, positive behaviour supports, crisis prevention, de-escalation, and appropriate intervention strategies.
- Provide support during appointments, recreational activities, community outings, school-related activities, and other approved programming.
- Monitor the child's or youth's safety, behaviour, emotional well-being, and overall presentation throughout the assigned service.
Supervised Family Visitation
- Provide supervised family visitation/access between children and their parents, siblings, caregivers, or other approved individuals.
- Maintain a safe, neutral, structured, professional, and supportive environment throughout supervised visits.
- Observe family interactions and objectively document relevant communication,
behaviours, parenting interactions, strengths, concerns, and significant events.
- Support safe and appropriate parent-child interactions through professional role modelling and guidance when required.
- Maintain neutrality and avoid becoming involved in conflicts or disputes between family members.
- Ensure visits are conducted in accordance with established service expectations, safety plans, court-related requirements, and instructions provided by the referring agency.
- Promptly communicate significant safety concerns, incidents, or changes in circumstances to the appropriate supervisor.
Client Transportation
- Provide safe and reliable transportation for children and youth as assigned.
- Transport clients to and from placements, family visits, school/daycare, medical or therapeutic appointments, recreational activities, community programs, and other approved destinations.
- Ensure children and youth are appropriately secured in the vehicle in accordance with applicable safety requirements.
- Maintain a safe, clean, reliable, and appropriately insured vehicle for client transportation.
- Follow approved transportation plans, pickup/drop-off instructions, and client-specific safety requirements.
- Maintain professionalism and appropriate supervision throughout transportation assignments.
- Promptly report transportation-related incidents, delays, safety concerns, or other significant events.
Documentation & Professional Responsibilities
- Complete accurate, factual, objective, professional, and timely documentation for all assigned services.
- Complete shift notes, case notes, supervised visitation reports, progress notes, Critical Incident Reports, Noteworthy Event documentation, and other required reports.
- Maintain confidentiality and safeguard all client, family, and organizational information.
- Maintain strong professional boundaries with children, youth, families, caregivers, and other individuals involved in service delivery.
- Respond calmly and appropriately to behavioural challenges, emergencies, unexpected situations, and crisis situations.
- Collaborate professionally with families, caregivers, caseworkers, agency staff, supervisors, and other members of the client's support team.
- Participate in required staff meetings, case conferences, training, supervision, and professional development.
- Follow all Family Forever Inc. policies, procedures, professional expectations, client-specific plans, and safety requirements.
- Perform other related duties as required to support children, youth, and families.
Qualifications & Requirements
- One (1) year of relevant experience working with children, youth, families, or vulnerable populations is preferred.
- A Diploma or Degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Community Support, Disability Studies, Educational Assistant, Early Childhood Education, or another related human services field is preferred.
- An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
- Experience providing 1:1 support to children or youth is considered a strong asset.
- Experience with supervised family visitation/access is considered an asset.
- Experience with crisis support, residential/group care, respite, community support, or child and youth services is considered an asset.
- Experience supporting children or youth with complex needs, disabilities, trauma, behavioural challenges,
or emotional regulation needs is highly valued.
- Knowledge and understanding of trauma-informed, client-centred, and strengths-based practices.
- Strong crisis-management, de-escalation, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong observational and critical-thinking abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prepare clear, factual, objective, and professional reports and documentation.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and strong professional boundaries.
- Ability to remain calm and skilled during challenging, unpredictable, or crisis situations.
- Ability to work independently in community-based settings while maintaining communication and accountability with supervisors.
- Ability to work collaboratively with children, youth, families, caregivers, caseworkers, coworkers, and other professionals.
- Must be reliable, punctual, professional, organized, flexible, and adaptable.
- Must be comfortable transporting children and youth as part of regular job duties.
- Flexibility to work days, after-school hours, evenings, weekends, statutory holidays, and occasional emergent shifts.
Mandatory Conditions of Employment Successful candidates must meet the following requirements at the time of hire:
- Valid Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search – must be current and valid at the time of hire.
- Child Intervention Record Check – must have been completed within the previous six (6) months and must be current/valid at the time of hire.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certification.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- Reliable personal vehicle suitable for transporting children and youth.
- Valid automobile insurance appropriate for work-related/client transportation.
- Acceptable Driver's Abstract.
- Must be willing and able to safely transport children and youth as part of regular job duties.
Employment and client assignments are conditional upon successful verification of all required checks, certifications, licences, and documentation.
Availability
This is a Casual / Relief position. Hours are not guaranteed and will vary depending on client needs, referrals, service assignments, and employee availability.
Applicants should have flexibility to work:
- Weekdays
- Before and after school
- Evenings
- Weekends
- Statutory holidays
- Occasional extended or emergent shifts
Evening and weekend availability is strongly preferred, as many supervised family visits and child and youth support assignments occur outside regular business hours. Compensation & Benefits
Pay: $18.00–$21.00 per hour
Starting wage will be determined based on relevant education, experience, training, and demonstrated competency.
