- Collaborative teams: Work with engineers, scientists, technologists, project leaders, and operations teams who value practical problem-solving and technical quality.
- Growth and learning: Take on varied technical challenges and help improve how engineering projects are planned, coordinated, documented, and delivered.
- Flexibility and balance: Join a workplace that values professionalism, accountability, and work-life balance.
About the Role In this role, you will provide both technical and people leadership for the team responsible for designing, verifying, and validating low-noise, low-power electronic systems used in underwater acoustic recorders, sensors, and related marine technology products. You will have the opportunity to stay close to the engineering work while also coaching team members, improving design practices, coordinating priorities across multidisciplinary projects, and helping the team deliver reliable, high-quality systems for challenging marine environments.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the design, verification, and validation of printed circuit assemblies for underwater acoustic recorders, sensors, and other JASCO equipment.
- Guide system-level electrical architecture for ultra-low-noise analogue/audio, mixed-signal, low-power, and sensor front-end electronics.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership for noise analysis, grounding, shielding, interference mitigation, power performance, environmental constraints, and related design risks.
- Lead design reviews, support troubleshooting of complex electrical issues, and mentor engineers in advanced analogue/audio, mixed-signal, and low-noise design practices.
- Support, mentor, and develop electrical engineering team members, helping them set priorities, strengthen technical approaches, maintain clear documentation, and continue growing professionally.
- Coordinate team workload, resource planning, task assignments, estimates, schedules, risks, and delivery commitments.
- Work closely with Systems, Mechanical, Firmware, Software, Production, Quality,
Supply Chain, external vendors, clients, and stakeholders to support integrated project delivery.
- Maintain clear, version-controlled engineering documentation, including design records, verification and validation evidence, review outputs, technical decisions, and supporting calculations.
- Identify and support practical improvements to design standards, documentation practices, review routines, prototype processes, test readiness, and knowledge sharing.
What You’ll Bring
- A degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Significant experience in electrical or electronic engineering, including experience supervising, mentoring, or providing technical leadership to engineering staff.
- Demonstrated strong expertise in ultra-low-noise analogue/audio circuit design and mixed-signal printed circuit board design for low-noise applications.
- Experience with the design, verification, and validation of printed circuit assemblies for electrical or electronic equipment.
- Strong working knowledge of noise analysis, grounding, shielding, interference mitigation, low-power design, and sensor front-end design such as hydrophones or microphones.
- Experience designing electronics for low-power, long-duration, field-deployed, or environmentally constrained systems.
- The ability to coordinate technical work, manage priorities, support estimates, identify risks, and contribute to project planning in a collaborative, deadline-driven engineering environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear technical documentation, reports, status updates, and design review materials.
- A collaborative leadership style with strong organizational, interpersonal, mentoring, problem-solving, and team-development skills.
- The ability to successfully complete reliability status security screening, including applicable criminal record and background checks and related residency requirements.
Assets
- Experience working in marine technology, underwater acoustics, ocean technology, environmental monitoring, instrumentation, sensors, embedded systems, or other specialized engineering environments.
- Understanding of environmental, mechanical, and deployment constraints relevant to marine systems.
- Experience working with hydrophones, microphones, underwater acoustic systems, or related sensor technologies.
- Experience supporting prototype builds, design iteration, production transition, test engineering, vendor coordination, or manufacturer engagement.
- Experience designing test systems,
test fixtures, or production test approaches for circuit boards or electronic assemblies.
- Board-level RF design experience.
- FPGA/CPLD design experience, including VHDL.
- Experience programming in C and/or using scientific analysis software.
- Experience improving engineering workflows, technical standards, design review practices, documentation systems, or quality processes.
- Professional engineering registration or eligibility for registration, where applicable.
Security Screening Requirement Because of the nature of the work, this position requires, at minimum, the ability to successfully complete reliability status security screening. This includes a 5-year criminal record check and a 5-year background check. To obtain this status in a timely manner, candidates must have resided continuously in Canada for the past 5 years. Please indicate in your resume or cover letter whether you meet the 5-year residence requirement.
