The Opportunity
Rightway Recruitment is representing a global leader in mining and infrastructure technology that is developing the next generation of battery-electric equipment and electrification solutions.
They are looking for an experienced Shop Manager to lead a specialized engineering workshop responsible for building and supporting prototype battery-electric vehicles and associated systems.
This is a highly hands-on leadership position combining shop management, electrical expertise, fabrication, troubleshooting, and prototype development. You will oversee the day-to-day activities of shop technicians while working closely with engineering teams to turn new designs and concepts into functional systems.
The ideal candidate is comfortable leading a small technical team while remaining close to the work, particularly around high-voltage electrical systems, controls, fabrication, and prototype development.
Key Responsibilities
Shop Leadership & Operations
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the engineering workshop
- Lead, coordinate, and assign work to shop technicians
- Manage technician productivity, workmanship, and quality
- Maintain a highly organized, safe, and effective workshop environment
- Coordinate priorities with engineering and technical teams
- Oversee health, safety, environmental, and quality standards within the shop
Electrical & Controls
- Work with high-voltage and high-current electrical equipment
- Pull electrical permits and coordinate with electrical inspectors
- Ensure electrical installations and modifications meet applicable codes
- Design and implement circuit protection and power distribution systems
- Work with relays, sensors, actuators, contactors, batteries, motors, inverters, and converters
- Create detailed electrical wiring schematics and diagrams
- Program and troubleshoot PLC and control systems
- Support arc flash calculations, training, and oversight
- Troubleshoot complex electrical and control system issues
Prototype & Fabrication
- Support the development and assembly of prototype battery-electric vehicles
- Coordinate welding, machining, and fabrication activities
- Work closely with welders, machinists, technicians, and engineers
- Support prototype modifications, testing, and troubleshooting
- Assist with microgrid design, development, and oversight
What You Bring
- Strong hands-on electrical and mechanical aptitude
- Experience leading a small team of technicians, welders, and/or machinists
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, controls, and troubleshooting
- Experience with high-voltage equipment and electrical safety
- Ability to read and create electrical schematics and technical drawings
- Strong problem-solving and mathematical abilities
- Comfortable working in a prototype, R&D;, or engineering shop environment
- Strong leadership,
organization, and communication skills
Strong Assets
- Red Seal certification
- PLC programming and troubleshooting experience
- High-voltage battery or electric vehicle experience
- Experience with inverters, motors, converters, and battery systems
- Welding, machining, or fabrication knowledge
- Microgrid experience
- Arc flash training and calculations
Working Environment
- Full-time, on-site position in Port Coquitlam
- Combination of hands-on technical work and shop leadership
- Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Prototype and R&D-focused; environment rather than traditional production manufacturing
Compensation & Benefits
- $100,000 - $130,00 annual salary
