Field Health & Safety Advisor
Full Time
Peace River, Alberta, Canada
Obsidian Energy has office locations throughout Alberta including Rocky Mountain House, Peace River, Esther, and Calgary. Frequent travel to field sites is expected, but this role is centralized in the Peace River region.

Obsidian Energy is seeking a passionate and motivated Field Health & Safety Advisor to join our team. Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety and Supply Chain, this role requires an individual that has broad experience with health and safety within the oil & gas industry. It will support all operational departments with a focus on production operations and facilities construction and will be required to travel frequently to field operational sites to provide health and safety collaboration, observation, and coaching.
The successful candidate will have a strong health and safety background, a collaborative working style and the ability to influence sound risk management decisions and promote Obsidian Energy’s safety culture.
Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Frequent travel to work locations to provide support and coaching relating to hazard assessment,
safety behaviours and leadership on site;
- Support client department(s) with regards to health and safety through stages of planning, execution, and post evaluation of major projects to enable continuous improvement and the reduction of undesired events;
- Assist and provide leadership in event response, investigation, immediate and root cause analysis, report writing, and corrective action follow-up;
- Advise and support the effective implementation, continuous improvement, and maintenance of the Obsidian Energy Health & Safety Management System, including technical advice and support of codes of practice, standards, rules, procedures, and guideline;
- Support, facilitate, and participate in health and safety meetings and other related communication;
- Support and/or conduct workplace health and safety inspections, worker observations and other leading indicator processes;
- Conduct orientations of Obsidian Energy policy and processes with new and current field employees;
- Support and advise client groups on the application of the corporate vendor/contractor management system – pre-qualification, orientation, field evaluation and post-assessment;
- Assist and promote the application and testing of the emergency response program at a field level; provide on-call support as applicable;
- Liaise with regulatory authorities on workplace health and safety matters as required; and
- Participate in mentorship/coaching opportunities with health and safety peers as applicable.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry in a Health & Safety Advisor or Coordinator role; combined experience in operational and health and safety roles will be considered
- Certificate or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent educational background
- CRSP or CRST designation would be an asset
- Strong team player with effective and open communication skills
- Ability to build relationships within organizations and provide effective coaching to influence behaviour and culture
- Ability to confidently and effectively present and communicate in large groups
- Ability to mediate and support conflict resolution when needed
- Solid verbal and written communication skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Excellent MS Office skills
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
