Firmware Developer

Phoenix Technology Services is a progressive and cutting-edge Calgary based Directional Drilling Company. Driven by our client’s needs, we are committed to providing more efficient and cost-effective drilling operations.

We have an opening for a Firmware Engineer based out of our SE Technical Centre location. Reporting to the Principal Engineer, the Firmware Developer is responsible for the design, implementation, testing, maintenance, and documentation of embedded firmware for Measurement While Drilling (MWD) systems. The role also includes supporting PC-based engineering utilities and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams throughout product development, manufacturing, and field support.The successful candidate is expected to continuously evaluate and adopt modern software engineering practices, development tools, and AI-assisted technologies to improve engineering productivity, software quality, and development efficiency.

This includes leveraging AI as an engineering productivity tool while exercising sound technical judgment and independently validating all design decisions, implementation details, and generated artifacts.

Specific Accountabilities (not all-inclusive)

- Design, develop, debug, and maintain embedded firmware for new and existing MWD products.
- Participate in firmware, hardware, and software design reviews.
- Troubleshoot firmware, hardware, communication, and system-level issues.
- Develop firmware architecture, technical specifications, test plans, validation procedures, and release documentation.
- Collaborate with Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Reliability, Operations, and Technology Development teams.
- Develop and execute firmware validation and integration testing.
- Maintain firmware source code, release artifacts, and documentation using the approved version-control system.
- Support prototype development, manufacturing, qualification testing, and field investigations.
- Maintain accurate technical records and provide regular progress updates.




- Perform all work in accordance with Company HSE requirements and quality management procedures.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent industry experience
- Minimum 5 years of embedded firmware development experience
- Strong proficiency in embedded C.
- Experience with dsPIC33 and STM32 microcontrollers and associated development tools
- Strong understanding of embedded communication protocols, including CAN, SPI, I²C, UART/RS-232, and RS-485
- Ability to read electrical schematics and understand electronic hardware
- Experience using laboratory test equipment, including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, and signal generators
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root-cause investigation skills
- Excellent technical writing and documentation skills
- Experience using Git for source-code management and collaborative development
- Demonstrated ability to effectively utilize modern AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g., ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor, or similar) to improve firmware development, debugging, documentation, code reviews, and technical research, while exercising sound engineering judgment and independently validating AI-generated results
- Strong communication, initiative, attention to detail, and ability to work independently within a multidisciplinary engineering team

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with Visual Studio, .NET, and C#
- Experience with automated testing or Test-Driven Development (TDD)
- Experience developing products for harsh environments or safety-critical systems
- Working knowledge of oilfield drilling operations, MWD/LWD systems, telemetry, or downhole instrumentation
