S3 Technical Inc. is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Flat Sheet CAD/CAM Technician Trainee to join our manufacturing team.
This is a training-focused position designed for someone with strong computer skills, mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and an interest in learning CAD/CAM programming and automated manufacturing.
The primary focus of this role is preparing and programming flat sheet metal parts for CNC production, including drawing preparation, part layout, nesting, and creating accurate machine-ready files.
Previous CAD/CAM or CNC programming experience is an asset, but not required for the right candidate. We are willing to train someone who demonstrates strong aptitude, accuracy, initiative, and the ability to learn technical processes.
Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of experienced team members, the successful candidate will learn to:
- Review production orders, customer drawings, specifications, and part requirements.
- Create and modify 2D flat sheet CAD drawings for manufacturing.
- Prepare parts for CNC cutting and automated fabrication equipment.
- Create productive flat sheet nests to maximize material utilization and minimize scrap.
- Convert PDFs, sketches, DXFs, DWGs, and other supplied files into usable manufacturing drawings.
- Verify dimensions, materials, quantities, and other production information before releasing jobs.
- Generate CNC-ready files and programs using CAD/CAM software.
- Make basic drawing and programming revisions when production requirements change.
- Maintain accurate drawing revisions, part files, programs, and electronic records.
- Work with CNC operators and production staff to resolve drawing, nesting, or programming questions.
- Identify potential drawing or manufacturing issues before material is cut.
What We’re Looking For Formal CAD/CAM experience is not necessarily required. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate:
- Strong computer aptitude and comfort learning new software.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong spatial and mechanical reasoning.
- Basic understanding of measurements, dimensions, and geometry.
- Ability to read or learn to read technical drawings.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to follow processes while also recognizing when something does not look correct.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple production jobs.
- Willingness to ask questions and learn from feedback.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a production team.
- Dependability, initiative, and a strong work ethic.
Any of the following would be considered an asset, but are not mandatory:
- CAD, drafting, engineering technology, CNC, machining, or manufacturing coursework.
- Experience using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar CAD software.
- Experience with CAM or automated nesting software.
- CNC machine operation or programming experience.
- Sheet-metal fabrication experience.
- Experience reading technical or fabrication drawings.
- Experience working with DXF, DWG, PDF, or other technical drawing formats.
Candidates with limited industry experience but strong technical aptitude are encouraged to apply. Pay: $19.00-$26.00 per hour
