Organizational Overview The Sisters of Charity, an international congregation of women religious, are committed to giving joyful witness to love, especially to those most in need. Some Sisters reside at Caritas Residence, a peaceful retirement community overlooking Halifax’s Bedford Basin, near the former Motherhouse and Mount Saint Vincent University. Caritas provides independent living, assisted living, and long-term care for the Sisters and other senior residents.
Role Overview The Fleet & Transportation Specialist is responsible for year round maintenance, operation, and coordination of the vehicle fleet (8 cars, 1 van, and a 16 passenger bus) serving the Sisters of Charity at Caritas Residence.
This role ensures that all vehicles are safe, reliable, compliant, well maintained, and available to support appointments, errands, outings, activities, and community events.
This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week. While transportation and fleet management are central responsibilities, we are seeking someone who is flexible, service-oriented, and willing to contribute wherever help is needed. The successful candidate will be someone who observes what needs to be done, takes initiative, and responds to changing priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely and reliably transport Sisters to appointments, errands, outings, activities, and special excursions.
- Provide courteous and compassionate assistance as Sisters enter and exit vehicles, ensuring their comfort, safety, and dignity.
- Coordinate routine and preventative vehicle maintenance, including service appointments and repairs.

- Ensure vehicle registrations, inspections, insurance requirements, accessible parking permits/tags, and other documentation remain current.
- Maintain accurate fleet records and complete related administrative tasks.
- Identify and promptly communicate maintenance, safety, or operational concerns.
- Work with the Finance Department as required on vehicle purchasing, replacement, and long-term fleet planning.
- Ensure the fleet remains safe, compliant, reliable, and available year-round.
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, organization, and presentation across all fleet vehicles.
Community Support Some weeks may involve significant driving to appointments, outings, and events or working on seasonal, routine or unexpected maintenance issues. Other weeks, the focus may shift toward community projects, special events,
or the day-to-day work of the Coordinator’s Office. The successful candidate will support the Coordinator’s Office and the broader community as needed. This could include:
- Helping prepare for community events, celebrations, and special activities.
- Assisting with deliveries, including donated goods to community organizations,
- Providing an extra set of hands with shopping, getting donated items to local charities, picking up and dropping off medical equipment including hearing aid repairs, eye glasses, beds, power lift chairs etc.
- Providing assistance when Sisters are moving into Caritas or moving to a different level of care within the residence.
- Lending a hand in with the day-to-day work of the Coordinator’s Office
Not every task will come with detailed instructions. We are looking for someone who is comfortable working with ambiguity, can assess a situation, see what needs to be done and takes initiative, can work independently and autonomously and take initiative. The ability to be flexible with a willingness to serve wherever needed is essential to success in this role. The Person We’re Looking For
