Role: Full Stack Developer (AI-focused)
Portfolio: Logistics
Location: Based in Montreal. Fully Remote.
About Valstone
Valstone acquires, operates, and provides a permanent home for mission critical technology businesses serving essential industrial and asset heavy markets globally. Valstone's mission is to build industry-leading positions across five key sectors: agriculture, logistics, food processing, bulk materials, and manufacturing, serving as an active operating partner to its portfolio companies.
This role sits within one of Valstone's logistics portfolio companies — a transportation technology business that builds mission-critical software used by ports, railroads, and terminal operators across North America to automate gate operations and improve transportation execution.
The Opportunity
We're looking for an experienced Full-Stack Developer to join the team behind a legacy gate and kiosk system relied on every day by some of the largest ports and railroads in North America. This is a hands-on build role: you'll design and ship a React.js frontend and Go-Lang backend, working closely with product and operations to replace legacy workflows with a faster, more reliable experience for terminal staff, drivers, and rail crews.
Beyond the core modernization, we expect to develop new products ancillary to the platform — you'll help shape and build that roadmap as it takes form, not just maintain what exists today. We also expect a baseline comfort using modern AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Cursor, Codex, or similar) as part of your day-to-day workflow.
What You'll Do
- Design, develop, and maintain applications with a React.js frontend and Go-Lang backend, with a near-term focus on modernizing a legacy gate and kiosk system.
- Lead or contribute to a ground-up refresh of gate/kiosk workflows used by port and rail terminals, balancing modernization against zero-downtime requirements for mission-critical, 24/7 operations.
- Help design and build new products ancillary to the core platform as that roadmap develops.
- Build and manage containerized solutions using tools such as Docker.
- Contribute to the development and deployment of cloud-native applications, leveraging platforms like AWS and Azure.
- Ensure code quality through thorough reviews, testing, and adherence to best practices.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams — product, operations, and support — to define requirements and deliver solutions.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, bugs, and other application issues.
- Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, Cursor, Codex) to accelerate delivery while maintaining code quality and security standards.
- Mentor junior developers, helping build team capability as the team grows.
What You'll Need
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3+ years of qualified software development experience, with full-stack expertise.
- Proficiency in React.js and Go-Lang, with a proven ability to deliver production-quality applications.
- Baseline comfort working with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or Codex as part of a modern engineering workflow.
- Hands-on experience with containerized solutions (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS or Azure for application deployment and scaling.
- Strong understanding of RESTful API design and integration.
- Solid grasp of database technologies, including Microsoft SQL.
- Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts.
Nice to Have
- Experience with .NET is a strong advantage.
- Prior experience in transportation, ports, rail, or other mission-critical industrial software.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or Splunk.
- Knowledge of microservices architecture and best practices.
