Job Title: Hardware Compliance Specialist (EMI/EMC) This role focuses on supporting the development of advanced embedded systems by ensuring they meet EMI/EMC and related hardware compliance standards. The Hardware Compliance Specialist analyzes requirements, evaluates compliance risks, and drives design decisions that align with industry and military standards while working hands-on in lab environments to test, validate, and de-risk designs.
Responsibilities
- Analyze hardware and system requirements to identify compliance risks and recommend design improvements for EMI/EMC and related standards.
- Support and participate in EMI/EMC design reviews to ensure alignment with applicable compliance standards and best practices.
- Develop, enhance, and utilize internal lab capabilities to de-risk hardware designs prior to formal compliance testing.
- Perform hands-on testing and validation activities in internal labs and coordinate testing activities in external labs.
- Coordinate and support formal compliance testing at external test laboratories, including scheduling, preparation, and execution oversight.
- Use debugging tools to investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve EMI/EMC and hardware issues identified during testing.
- Verify power supply performance and behavior under EMI/EMC, thermal, vibration, and environmental conditions.
- Design, review, and debug cable assemblies to meet EMI/EMC and signal integrity requirements.
- Conduct verification testing for thermal, vibration, and environmental conditions in accordance with relevant standards such as MIL-STD-810 and DO-160.
- Support verification and compliance efforts related to control goods clearance, military standards, and thermal systems.
- Ensure hardware designs comply with EMI/C standards such as EN61000 and/or CISPR, as well as EM emissions standards such as SDIP/TEMPEST.
- Document all test activities, methodologies, and configurations, and summarize results in clear, concise, and comprehensive reports.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to communicate test findings and drive corrective actions or design changes.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of compliance processes, test methods, and lab capabilities to support ongoing technical growth.
Essential Skills
- Proven hardware experience with hands-on EMI/EMC experience in a lab verification environment.
- Strong hands-on testing, verification, and debug skills for hardware and embedded systems.
- Practical experience with EMI/EMC testing, including setup, execution, and interpretation of results.
- Experience with power supply verification, including performance, stability, and compliance under EMI/EMC conditions.
- Experience with cable design and debugging to meet EMI/EMC and signal integrity requirements.
- Familiarity with control goods clearance processes and working within regulated environments.
- Knowledge of military standards (mil std) related to hardware and environmental testing.
- Experience with thermal systems and verification testing for thermal, vibration, and environmental performance.
- Understanding of EMI/C standards such as EN61000 and/or CISPR.
- Knowledge of EM emissions standards such as SDIP/TEMPEST.
- Experience in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline, with a focus on hardware and embedded systems.
Assets
- Experience performing thermal, vibration,
and environmental testing in accordance with MIL-STD-810 and DO-160.
- Experience conducting EMI/C testing to EN61000 and/or CISPR standards.
- Exposure to EM emissions SDIP/TEMPEST compliance activities.
- Ability to interpret and apply military and industry standards to practical hardware design and test scenarios.
- Strong documentation skills for producing clear test plans, procedures, and reports.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and contribute to technical design reviews.
- Interest in broad technical exposure across multiple products and technologies, rather than a narrowly defined role.
- Motivation to develop technical leadership skills and contribute to continuous improvement of compliance and verification processes.
Work Environment This position is based on site five days per week in Kanata, working primarily in a hardware lab and embedded systems development workplace. The role involves extensive hands-on work with test equipment, debugging tools, and compliance test setups for EMI/EMC, power supplies, cable assemblies, and environmental verification. Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $90300.00 - $140000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
