Valuemed is seeking an experienced Service Technician for a 3-6 month, part- time contract to assist with the continued development and implementation of our in-house medical/dental equipment service department. This position would be ideally suited to a recently retired service technician or service department professional with experience in this field.
This is a hands-on, team-oriented contract position for an experienced technician with robust skills in diagnosing, repairing, servicing, maintaining, and troubleshooting healthcare equipment. The successful candidate will work closely with our team to implement and refine our existing service processes and procedures, while also providing practical training, guidance, and mentorship to our repair trainees.
We provide workspace equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to support the service and training activities. The position is in person and may include some travel and work at client sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform hands-on troubleshooting, diagnosis, inspection, cleaning, repair, testing, servicing, and preventative maintenance on medical and dental equipment, including handpieces, autoclaves, dental chairs, medical chairs, and other specialized equipment, while training and mentoring repair trainees through the work being performed.
- Provide practical, hands-on instruction to trainees on proper diagnostic techniques, repair methods, testing procedures, preventative maintenance, equipment handling, and safe work practices.
- Train and assist team members with implementing, organizing, and following Valuemed’s service and repair processes and procedures.
- Work within established procedures while providing practical recommendations for improvements when appropriate.
- Work with trainees and the service team to refine service workflows, parts ordering and inventory processes, repair procedures, checklists, documentation, and equipment service processes.
- Assist with developing and implementing training materials, service procedures, and competency requirements for service personnel,
using practical hands on training wherever possible.
- Train and guide others on properly documenting all service and repair activities to ensure traceability, including service records, equipment histories, parts usage, repair tracking, preventative maintenance, and other required documentation.
- Identify additional tools, diagnostic and test equipment, replacement parts, or other resources required to support the service department, while teaching trainees how and when these resources are used.
- Train and assist others in performing routine maintenance checks on shop equipment and tools and in following proper inventory control, parts tracking, and material handling procedures.
- Provide practical input into the continued development and improvement of service-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, checklists, and technical documentation.
- Work with management and trainees to identify opportunities to improve service efficiency, quality, consistency, and turnaround times.
- Train and mentor team members in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment and complying with workplace safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Demonstrate and reinforce how service and repair work must be completed in accordance with manufacturer specifications, company procedures, and applicable regulatory and quality requirements.
- Train and assist team members with proper service documentation and billing practices, including accurate recording of labour, parts, repairs, and applicable service charges.
Qualifications
- Previous experience servicing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing medical, dental,
or similar electronic/electromechanical equipment.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills with experience working with electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems.
- Experience using common hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and electrical test equipment such as torque wrenches, multimeters, power supplies, and similar equipment.
- Strong understanding of preventative maintenance, calibration, testing, and equipment safety principles.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, mechanical drawings, electronic schematics, service documentation, and manufacturer specifications.
- Soldering experience.
- Basic computer proficiency and working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
- Experience training, mentoring, or supervising junior technicians or trainees is strongly preferred.
- Experience developing or working with service procedures, work instructions, or technical documentation is an asset.
- Experience assisting with the implementation or improvement of a technical service department is an asset.
- Experience with inventory control, parts tracking, or equipment maintenance is an asset.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, communication, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn new technical processes.
Hours
- Hours will be determined based on business needs and candidate availability. The anticipated schedule is Tuesday to Thursday, approximately 6–8 hours per day. The contract may be extended based on business needs and the results of the initial contract period
Salary
- Negotiable and will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and availability.
