HVAC Journeyman

Position: Full-Time, Permanent

About West Coast Heating and AC Inc.

West Coast Heating and AC Inc. is a growing Calgary-based HVAC contractor providing commercial, multi-residential, construction, retrofit, and service work.

We are looking for an experienced HVAC Journeyman to join our field team. This position is suited to a skilled tradesperson who takes pride in quality workmanship, works safely and efficiently, and can take responsibility for completing work properly the first time.

Our field team is experienced and highly skilled, and we are looking for another strong tradesperson who wants to build a long-term career with a growing company.

The Position The HVAC Journeyman will perform installation, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, commissioning, and related HVAC work on a variety of commercial and multi-residential projects.

You will work independently and as part of a project team while coordinating with foremen, project managers, other trades, suppliers, customers, and apprentices.

This is a hands-on field position requiring strong technical ability, sound judgment, and the ability to solve problems on site.

Key Responsibilities

- Install, service, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC equipment and systems.
- Perform work on rooftop units, furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, make-up air units, exhaust systems, split systems, and related mechanical equipment.
- Install and service refrigeration piping, condensate piping, duct connections, controls, and associated components.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, and manufacturer documentation.
- Perform equipment start-up, testing, commissioning, and system verification.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, airflow, and control-related issues.
- Perform preventative maintenance and equipment inspections.
- Complete retrofit and replacement work on existing HVAC systems.
- Coordinate work with other trades and site personnel.
- Identify installation conflicts or site issues and communicate them promptly to the foreman or project manager.
- Maintain accurate service records, work orders, equipment information, and field documentation.
- Ensure materials, equipment, and tools are properly used and maintained.




- Assist with planning daily work and material requirements.
- Provide direction and mentorship to apprentices when required.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas.
- Follow company safety procedures, site requirements, and applicable codes and regulations.
- Represent West Coast Heating and AC Inc. professionally when dealing with customers, contractors, property managers, and other trades.

QualificationsRequired

- Recognized Alberta Journeyperson Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic certification or equivalent recognized trade certification.
- Minimum 5 years of HVAC industry experience.
- Strong knowledge of commercial and multi-residential HVAC equipment and systems.
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, specifications, and equipment documentation.
- Understanding of refrigeration systems and proper service procedures.
- Ability to perform equipment installations, start-ups, service, and commissioning.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a field team.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Valid Alberta driver's licence with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to safely lift equipment, materials, and tools associated with HVAC work.
- Comfortable working on rooftops, ladders, mechanical rooms, construction sites, and other typical HVAC work environments.

Assets
- Gasfitter certification.
- Experience with commercial rooftop equipment.
- Experience with make-up air systems and ventilation equipment.
- Experience with VRF/VRV systems.
- Experience with heat pumps.
- Experience with hydronic systems.
- Experience with building automation and HVAC controls.
- Experience leading apprentices or small field crews.
- Experience working on commercial construction projects.
- First Aid, Fall Protection, WHMIS, Aerial Work Platform, or other relevant safety certifications.
