We are looking for an experienced and engaging Adult ESL Instructor to teach practical, scenario-based English to adult learners at our learning centre in Oakville.
The focus of the program is to help adult learners become more confident and comfortable using English in real-life situations. This is not primarily a textbook- or test-preparation-based position. We are looking for someone who can create an interactive, supportive classroom environment and help students practice English through realistic everyday scenarios.
Schedule
Candidates should be available at least two days per week, Monday to Friday, during one or both of the following time periods:
- 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Consistent weekday daytime availability is important. Additional teaching hours may become available depending on enrollment.
Responsibilities
- Teach English to adult ESL learners in small-group classes
- Design and deliver practical, scenario-based English lessons
- Help students improve conversational fluency, listening comprehension, pronunciation, vocabulary, and confidence
- Create role-playing and communication activities based on real-life situations, such as:
- Going to the doctor or pharmacy
- Shopping and returning items
- Ordering food and making reservations
- Banking and making appointments
- Speaking with teachers or schools
- Workplace communication
- Making phone calls
- Social conversations and small talk
- Asking for information and solving everyday problems
- Adapt lessons to different English levels and adult learning needs
- Encourage students to speak and actively participate rather than relying mainly on lectures or worksheets
- Provide constructive and encouraging feedback
Qualifications
- Previous experience teaching ESL/EFL or English to adult learners
- Strong spoken and written English
- Experience teaching conversational or practical English
- Ability to develop engaging, scenario-based lessons and role-play activities
- Strong communication and classroom management skills
- Patient, encouraging, and comfortable working with adult learners from different language backgrounds
- Reliable weekday daytime availability
Preferred Qualifications
- OCT certification, TESL/TESOL/TEFL certification, or other relevant teaching credentials
- Experience teaching adult newcomers or immigrant learners in Canada
- Experience developing practical life-skills English or conversation programs
- Experience as a classroom teacher or adult education instructor
