Responsibilities

Please note: This position is expected to be filled by internal reappointment. The International Orientation Assistant will provide support in developing, planning, and implementing various student programming including Western’s international orientation program as part of the International Student Services (ISS) team in Western International. The role will assist incoming students by providing the necessary information, support, and documentation to ensure a successful student arrival and transition to Canada. The assistant will collaborate with the ISS team and campus partners to develop engaging orientation and ongoing yearly programming for both graduate and undergraduate international and exchange students.

The International Orientation

Assistant will also assist in selecting and providing supervision and guidance to volunteers assisting with orientation and arrivals programming. The incumbent will take guidance from the Program Coordinator, Student Arrivals and Orientation, and work collaboratively to support projects with the ISS team, the larger Western International team, and other members of the Western Community.

This position is fully in-person,



on-site from the Western International office.

Hours per Week

10 hours/week from September 14 - December 11, 2026

Qualifications

Education

- Must be a current Western student enrolled for the 2026 – 2027 school year

Experience
- Previous experience with event planning and program management an asset
- Previous experience volunteering or working with Western International an asset

Skills, Abilities & Experience
- Strong intercultural competencies with an ability to establish rapport with people from diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrates active engagement and creativity in planning, designing, and implementing novel student programming
- Project management and time management skills including managing multiple project deadlines, setting priorities, and adapting to changing circumstances
- Volunteer management skills including onboarding, team relationship-building, facilitating team decision making, providing constructive feedback, and fostering a culture of individual learning
- Written and verbal communication skills to express ideas clearly, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
- Robust public speaking skills with the ability to develop and deliver engaging training and workshops to a variety of audiences
- Asks for help with projects and tasks where needed
- Actively listens and values perspectives from a variety of sources to meet stakeholder needs in program development
- Computer skills with Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn and use new software programs as required
- Design skills with Powerpoint and Canva to create posters and presentations when required
- Ability to develop and execute ISS signature programming and events




- Demonstrates integrity and works in accordance with Western’s policies and procedures
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students, and the public
- Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements as applicable
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, to accommodate the University’s scheduled events and activities
- Ability to work on campus for the duration of the position
