In this role, you'll install, maintain, and repair fire suppression systems in everything from low-rise multi-family developments to commercial builds, ensuring every system meets NFPA standards, the Alberta Building Code, and Calgary Fire Department requirements. Your craftsmanship will directly protect the people who live and work in the buildings we serve — this is hands-on, high-responsibility work in a fast-paced construction environment.
Duties
- Install, assemble, and test wet, dry, and pre-action sprinkler systems in accordance with NFPA 13, 13R, and 13D, project blueprints, and mechanical schematics
- Read and interpret fire protection drawings, mechanical schematics, and shop drawings to execute installations accurately across multiplex and commercial sites
- Perform MIG and TIG welding to fabricate and join piping components to code
- Fit, cut, thread, and groove pipe using hand tools, calipers, and precision measurement equipment
- Conduct system inspections, flow testing, and troubleshooting in line with CAN/ULC-S1001 and manufacturer specifications, preparing for Calgary Fire Department and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) sign-off
- Coordinate installation timing and rough-in with other trades on multiplex builds, where unit density and staging can be tight
- Rig and move piping, risers, and equipment safely on active construction and manufacturing sites
- Maintain accurate documentation for inspection, testing,
and as-built records required for permit closeout
- Work safely at heights, in mechanical rooms, and around other trades, following Alberta OHS regulations and site-specific safety plans
- Collaborate with the project team to hit deadlines without compromising code compliance or workmanship
Requirements
- Valid Journeyman Sprinkler System Installer certification through Skilled Trades Alberta, or recognized equivalent (out-of-province certification holders welcome to apply)
- Proven experience installing and maintaining fire sprinkler systems in residential multiplex and/or commercial construction settings
- Working knowledge of NFPA 13/13R/13D, the Alberta Building Code, Alberta Fire Code, and applicable CSA and ULC standards
- Proficiency in MIG and TIG welding for pipe fabrication and repair
- Strong blueprint and schematic reading skills, with solid mechanical aptitude and exact measurement practices
- Familiarity with rigging, HVAC-adjacent plumbing systems, and general construction sequencing
- Comfortable moving between active job sites across Calgary; valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Current or willingness to obtain WHMIS and working-at-heights certification
- A safety-first mindset and the professionalism to represent SSPH on client and builder job sites
